The dependency of RES on the weather and climate increased the interest on bulk energy storage methods to supply firm power. Pumped-hydro energy storage systems are a step ahead among other bulk energy storage methods because these are more efficient and they have higher storage capacities. The present study focuses on the use of grid connected wind-pumped hydro power station supply energy. A hybrid wind-pumped hydro storage system was designed and simulated using real data, and economic analysis was performed by calculating the basic pay-back period, the net present value and the internal rate of return. According to the results, it is found that the hybrid system is actively used and a part of the electricity is supplied from the wind-pumped hydro system. In addition, it was obtained that the pumped hydro storage systems are very suitable to be used together with wind power plants.

Following the accession of Croatia in the European Union a number of questions are raised regarding Croatia's legal framework and its ability to cope with the demands that it faces. This paper provides an overview of the current status of the Croatian energy sector framework and discusses the prospects of successful reform in this new Member State. One of the main aims of this paper is to discuss the current progress, potential prospects and challenges for implementing a successful reform model in the newest EU Member State - Croatia. In this context, it is necessary to note the difficulties in analysing electricity reform which derive from the fact that it can take many different forms, that it involves a number of interrelated steps and that it is an ongoing process. With that in mind, the approach to the problem was a thorough literature review of all possible factors influencing the development of the Croatian energy sector and a detailed analysis of all the options and problems the sector faces. The study offers a detail structure of the energy sector discusses its situation, problems and offers insights on possible paths to improvement.

Experimental investigation of solar/wind hybrid system for irrigation in Konya, Turkey

In this study, an experimental research for agricultural irrigation was completed for a renewable hybrid power generation system consisting of photovoltaic panels and wind turbine which can be considered as an alternative to Diesel generators used for pumping applications. Generated electricity was used to power a 300 W DC-driven submersible pump at 2.5 m depth of the ground level. Overall efficiencies of the wind turbine and cell efficiencies of the photovoltaic panels in July 2011 were calculated as 33.3% and 10.07%, respectively. It was observed that the daily mean of produced electricity by the system in July was enough to pump daily average 44.1 m 3 /day of water from the depth of 2.5 m and totally 1368 m 3 of water during the month. It was calculated that the amount of pumped water is sufficient to meet water need of the agricultural products that were 12.4 decares of sugar beet, 13.0 decares of potatoes, 13.4 decares for corn, 13.6 decares green bean and 10.8 decares for sun flower with the drip irrigation method. It was demonstrated that the renewable hybrid energy system enables to save the 10410 USD on energy in twenty-year period after the basic payback period of 5.7 years. In addition, the net present value and internal rate of return of the project were found to be 7361 USD and 12.6%, respectively.
