This article asserts that while the contents of the “politics of the past” changed completely after Croatia's independence in 1990, the manner in which a dominant historical narrative was asserted during the era of President Franjo Tuđman remained the same, thanks to the Manichean worldview on which it rested, a d… Show more

“…Yugoslav names and symbols disappeared from public spaces (Rihtman-Auguštin 2000;Lebhaft 2013), educational and cultural institutions were overhauled (Bingula 2012;Koren 2015), and new public holidays instituted (Rihtman-Auguštin 2000). Yugoslavian anti-fascism was replaced with a lenient attitude towards NDH (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska: Independent State of Croatia, this volume Zaremba) symbols 6 (Pavlaković 2008a;Radonić 2013). NDH was re-interpreted as an era of "independence", as opposed to Yugoslav "oppression", while new monuments and nomenclature revived figures from the distant past (Rihtman-Auguštin 2000;Grgin 2007).…”

“…A predominant part of the scholarship dealing with post-Communist Croatia points to a strong right-wing historical revisionism that was undertaken by the 1990s government headed by President Franjo Tudman, especially regarding the legacy of World War II (WWII) in Croatia (Uzelac 1998(Uzelac , 2006Bellamy 2003;Gagnon 2004;Goldstein and Hutinec 2007;Dulic 2009;Radonic 2012aRadonic , 2012bRadonic , 2013. Following Tudmari's notorious utterance that the Croatian Nazi-puppet state was an expression of the historic aspirations of the Croatian people to establish their own state, the process of revisionism purportedly obscured the Partisan anti-fascist legacy of Josip Broz Tito and instead rehabilitated the legacy of the Croatian Ustasa.…”
