Critical success factors on project and process management in competitive strategy implementation

Goal: The main purpose of this work is to develop several production planning models for one of bottle grade PET production plants (in Turkey) under different scenarios by considering different levels of inventory (no stock and different levels of safety stocks), different energy sourcing alternatives (natural gas/coal or both) and production throughput (different lot sizes). Design/Methodology/Approach: Deterministic multi-product multi-period single level mixed integer linear programming model is presented. The model is implemented for the above defined scenarios. We have also considered the total emission produced for different energy alternatives. Results: The models for the different scenarios have shown that significant performance improvements can be achieved by changing the parameters/policies of the production. The best model obtained has yielded 6.6% of profit improvement and 6.9% of cost reduction. Limitations of the investigation: Planning horizon of this work could cover the data of years 2014 to 2018. However, the actual data employed for this study is limited with one year due to unavailability of further data. In addition to this, improvement of current production planning approach of the plant by implementation of proposed model is one of the objectives of this study to see success rate of model. Though, this couldn’t be realized. We hypothetically tested the improvement provided by the proposed model, therefore we can’t analyze the actual improvement. Practical implications: Interactions among optimal results obtained by running model with different scenarios and their effect on selected performance variables are the main contribution of this work. Similar methodology could be used at other PET resin manufacturing plants or alternatively the production facilities having similar type of continuous manufacturing processes to find their optimal levels of inventory, production throughput and proper choice for energy sourcing alternative. Originality/Value: The research on the production planning for PET resin industry by considering the different scenarios (levels of inventory / energy sourcing alternatives/ production throughput) is novel as far as we know, and therefore the approach used in this study is expected to be useful for other similar plants.

Information security governance in the electricity industry

Goal: This study aims to assess the importance and use of Information Security (IS) governance in the electricity industry and other segments, in order to propose IS governance guidelines for this industry.Design / Methodology / Approach: Literature review was made of scientific articles, frameworks and norms that supported the field research applied to managers, coordinators and experts from IS area, totaling 104 respondents from different countries. The data collected were analyzed by comparing the degree of importance with the use, and also by means of cross-analysis.Results: It was observed that most respondents agree with the importance of the themes approached, however, in practice, these concepts are not always used by the organization. Besides, it was observed that when security is directly responding for the high level of the organization, the maturity level is between optimized and managed. However, where security is subordinated to the technology area, the level appears with higher percentage, as repeatable. Limitations of the investigation:The sample size is a limiting factor as it was conditioned to questionnaire responses sent to IS experts through electronic means and social networks and it is not possible to generalize as the population size is not known. Practical implications:To assist the electricity industry in taking measures turned to IS governance, and, with that, increase consumer protection with regard to their classified data and the company's reliability in power supply.Originality / Value: The present research originality lies in the proposal of 10 IS governance guidelines obtained from the literature review and the field research applied to IS experts, aiming to raise, more and more, its level of maturity.

A Proposal for updating the Aeronautic enlisted men’s evaluating performance instrument based on the perceptions of senior and warrant officers

Goal: identify the key competencies, in the perception of the senior officers and the warrant officers of the Air Force, necessary for the enlisted men to perform their functions and subject to consideration for updating the existing performance evaluation instrument. Design / Methodology / Approach: preliminarily, a documentary and bibliographic research was carried out, capable of supporting the construction of a questionnaire, which was answered by 674 senior officers and 727 warrant officers belonging to the research target audience. Data were analyzed using centrality and dispersion parameters, also considering Pearson's coefficient of variation. Results: 29 competencies could be identified as being the main key competencies, highlighting those related to the alignment with military precepts. Limitations: it is possible to obtain a large amount of data using questionnaire, but the method does not allow to deepen the structure and processes that involve the questions asked. Also, distortions can occur caused by the subjectivity present in the respondents' perception. Practical implications: the results proved to be a proposal to updating the current performance evaluation system for enlisted men. Value: the value of this research is its contribution to a better performance evaluation system for the Brazilian Air Force enlisted men.
