Laminated composite shells are frequently used in various engineering applications including aerospace, mechanical, marine, and automotive engineering. This article reviews the recent literature on the static analysis of composite shells. It follows up with the previous work published by the first author [1-4] and it is a continuation of another recent article that focused on the dynamics of composite shells [3]. This paper reviews most of the research done in recent years (2000-2010) on the static and buckling behavior (including postbuckling) of composite shells. This review is conducted with an emphasis on the analysis performed (static, buckling, postbuckling, and others), complicating effects in both material (e.g. piezoelectric) and structure (e.g. stiffened shells), and the various shell geometries (cylindrical, conical, spherical and others). Attention is also given to the theory being applied (thin, thick, 3D, nonlinear …). However, more details regarding the theories have been described in previous work [1,3]

Refined two-dimensional models are proposed for the static hygrothermoleastic analysis of multilayered composite and sandwich shells. These shell models are developed in the framework of the Carrera's unified formulation (in a general and unified manner) by considering both equivalent single layer and layerwise multilayer description. The principle of virtual displacements contains elastic, thermal and hygroscopic strains. The governing equations allow mechanical, thermal and hygroscopic loads to be applied and they are solved in a closed-form solution. Thermal and hygroscopic loads are defined by means of appropriate temperature and moisture content profiles through the thickness of the shell, such profiles can ‘a priori’ be assumed or they can be calculated by solving the Fourier heat conduction equation and the Fick's moisture diffusion law. Such equations are solved in steady-state conditions and in curvilinear coordinates for the shell geometries. The presence of loads due to hygroscopic and thermal effects (in addition to the mechanical load) modifies the bending response of multilayered shells. Comparisons between classical and refined models, and between assumed and calculated temperature and moisture content profiles are proposed in the cases of composite and sandwich shells. The use of refined models combined with calculated temperature and moisture content profiles through the thickness is mandatory for a correct elasto-thermo-hygroscopic analysis of multilayered structures.

Delamination has been a subject of concern in engineering applications of layer structures because of the resulting reduction in load-bearing capacity, degradation of structural integrity and stiffness. The delamination may result from the interlaminar stresses created by impacts, eccentricities in structural load paths or from discontinuities in the structure. Under in-plane compressive loads the delamination may cause local buckling of the delaminated region or global buckling or mixed mode buckling. Due to this the delaminated structure has a lower ability to resist compressive loads. The reduction in this ability depends on the number, shape and positions of the delaminations. An exact solution is developed for predicting the buckling loads of two-layer beams with an asymmetrically located delamination. The delaminated two-layer beam is modeled as a combination of four interconnected sub-beams. The characteristic equation, governing buckling is derived by using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and by imposing appropriate equilibrium, kinematic continuity and boundary conditions. An excellent agreement is observed between the present and previously published data for homogeneous delaminated beam cases. New nondimensionalized parameters, nondimensionalized axial and bending stiffnesses and effective-slenderness ratio (ESR) are defined and introduced for the first time to study delamination buckling. Parametric studies have been conducted in terms of these new nondimensionalized parameters on the buckling load for various delamination sizes and locations. A monotonic relation is observed between the buckling load and the nondimensionalized axial stiffness and between the buckling load and the nondimensionalized bending stiffness.
