This study aims to introduce an innovative method to schedule and analyze the discharge planning processes under uncertain individual activity completing times. Hospital care processes ending in discharging older adults represent a major challenge, as a number of interrelated tasks or activities are involved in the processes. The functional resonance analysis method (FRAM) is used to identify activities that constitute a descriptive model of the discharge planning processes and to assign the completion time to each task or activity. Then the critical path planning technique is utilized to identify the critical path of the discharge process. To this end, the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is employed. Published data regarding six older patients are used to examine the potential utility of the introduced method to improve the discharge process of older adults. The results show that the integration of the FRAM and PERT is able to identify the critical activities that constitute the critical path of the discharge process. It also helps analyze the completion time assigned to each task/activity and calculate the completion time of the discharge process. The probability of completing the discharge process within a target completion time is also discussed. The results add further evidence showing the applicability of the FRAM and PERT to scheduling systems for the discharge planning processes. Health care professionals could use the findings of this study in designing a scheduling system to complete the discharge process of older adults in a reasonable time.

The demand for high-strength grade fibers and consumption of viscose fibers shows increasing tendency and growing trends in use of this product. Regenerated cellulose-based fibers of various properties are produced in order to meet all needs using new production technologies developed especially in recent years. One of the key processes in fiber spinning is continuous drying before final winding on spools. The manufacturing methods used for viscose fibers allows production of various types, parameters and specifications of fibers. It is therefore increasingly necessary to implement and standardize a drying concept to stabilize subprocess in a continuous production manufacturing as much as possible within the desired parameters of the final product. These activities and methods embody concepts for production of the highest quality fibers suitable to both producers and users. Currently, the concept of drying viscose fibers in a continuous production process is a problem that affects its final shape and quality properties such as commercial weight, linear density and tensile properties of all products and lengths for staple fibers as well as shrinkage and twisting for yarns of fibers. Due to that, development of technology enabling maximum stabilization of the drying process to achieve long-term sustainable final fiber quality parameters was adopted as a strategic project, including incorporation of efficient solutions for the overall energy intensity of this process in order to reduce the manufacturing carbon footprint by 23.81%. The production of viscose fibers and the project also aims to achieve significant energy savings up to 24 509.9 GJ·year-1.

Increasing Efficiency in Inventory Control of Products with Sporadic Demand Using Simulation

The goal of this paper is to examine whether, in Q-system inventory control policy, a combination of the reorder point exceeding order quantity leads to minimal holding and ordering costs when dealing with sporadic demand. For this purpose, a past stock movement simulation is applied to a set of randomly generated data with different numbers of zero demand periods ranging from 10 to 90%. The outputs of the simulation prove that in situations where stock holding costs are too high, the simulation tends to reduce average stock by overcoming periods between two demand peaks with an increase in the numbers of small replenishment orders and reaches lower stock holding and ordering costs. Furthermore, the correlation analysis proves that there is a statistically significant relationship (r = .847, p = .004) between the number of time series that reach minimal holding and ordering costs under the control of reorder point (replenishment order) and the demand standard deviation affected by the evolving sporadicity. These findings can support decision making linked with inventory management of products with sporadic demand and contribute to development of business information systems.
