Critical length sampling: a method to estimate the volume of downed coarse woody debris

Abstract: In this paper, critical length sampling for estimating the volume of downed coarse woody debris is presented. Using this method, the volume of downed wood in a stand can be estimated by summing the critical lengths of down logs included in a sample obtained using a relascope or wedge prism; typically, the instrument should be tilted 90°from its usual orientation in sampling live trees. The critical length of a downed tree is the length of the log section large enough in diameter to be counted from the selected… Show more

“…Affleck (2008) merged PDS with PI sampling to create line intercept distance sampling to improve fuel sampling and got similar performances to PDS. Ståhl et al (2010) merged critical length methods with PDS which appears to have improved CWD sampling. However, few studies have yet examined the performance of various sampling techniques for measuring across multiple fuelbed components, such as combinations of FWD and CWD, live and dead shrubs, and herbs on the forest.…”

“…During the last 15 years, numerous more efficient field-based sampling methods for assessing the quantity and quality of CWD have been applied and developed (Ståhl et al 2001(Ståhl et al , 2010Ducey et al 2013;Gove et al 2013). Strip sampling was a common inventory method for collecting information about living trees in the past, but nowadays it is mainly used for rare forest characteristics (Stehman and Salzer 2000), while fixed-sized sample plots, which are widely used in forest inventories, are also common in CWD inventories (Ståhl et al 2001;Gove and van Deusen 2011).…”

“…1. In past simulation studies, grid cell resolutions on the order of one quarter to one half meter have proven quite reasonable (Williams and Gove, 2003;Gove et al, 2005;Ståhl et al, 2010;Gove and Van Deusen, 2011), therefore we employ half-meter resolution here. The log population for the simulations was constructed from a simple taper equation (Van Deusen, 1990) given in Table 2.…”
