Critical Issues and Opportunities for Producing Biomethane in Italy

Abstract: Nowadays, most Italian biogas produces electricity even though recent political incentives are promoting biomethane from biogas by “upgrading” it. The aim of this paper is to focus on the regulatory framework for producing biomethane from new or already-existent anaerobic digestion plants. The complexity and lack of knowledge of the regulations on biofuel production and of anaerobic digested biomethane from waste and by-products create difficulties of both interpretation and application. Consequently, the aim … Show more

“…In Italy, biofuel plantation, particularly biogas, boosts farmers economies and is suitable sustainable agricultural production (Bortoluzzi et al, 2014). In its southern part, Italy has a prominent biogas potential and lands that are ideal for producing biomethane (Murano et al, 2021), especially the existence of a biofuel refinery in Milan that belongs to IM Biofuel Italy Srl. Therefore, the threat to the domestic biofuel cycle could cost a socioeconomic issue.…”

“…The biogas sector in Italy developed dynamically in 2008-2012, thanks to the feed-in tariff system (Murano et al, 2021). At that time, they were the highest in the European Union in terms of support offered to small biogas plants using slurry and energy crops.…”

“…In Italy, 2.5 billion m 3 of biogas is produced in nearly 1600 biogas plants, which use waste and side products from the agri-food sector as substrates [55]. The oldest biogas plants in Italy are high power (over 5 MW).…”
