In the era of Industry 4.0 and circular economy, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are under huge pressure to make their manufacturing operations ethical and sustainable. Business with ethical and sustainable operations has become the need of the day in the present environment of Industry 4.0 and circular economy. It has been observed that the application of Industry 4.0 technologies may help in achieving the goal of ethical and sustainable operations. Although a lot of research has been done in context to larger enterprises, limited research is available on the application of Industry 4.0 technologies in SMEs for ethical and sustainable operations. The espousal of Industry 4.0 technologies is a challenging task for SMEs due to various operational and financial constraints. The problem is more acute, specifically in context to developing countries like India. Keeping in mind the role of technologies in ethical business and circular economy, we have identified fifteen challenges, impacting the application of Industry 4.0 technologies in SMEs. A questionnaire was designed for collecting the response from industry and academic experts. On the collected data, the DEMATEL approach has been applied to check the degree of influence and interrelationship among challenges. It has also helped in the categorization of factors as cause and effect. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to validate the results obtained from the DEMATEL approach. Authors have observed that lack of motivation from partners and customers on the application of I4.0 technologies is the leading challenge. Fear of failure of I4.0 technologies is the main effect group challenge. The findings of the study will help SMEs in formulating strategies for implementing Industry 4.0 technologies for ethical and sustainable business processes.

Resource depletion is a concern for the global economy; many think that available resources on the planet will not be able to cater to an ever-growing population. Thus, economies are trying to become circular, leaving behind the linear tradition linear approach. In the circular economy (CE), physical resources and energy are made to loop back into the supply chain (SC) for a more extended period. Proper selection of suppliers is an essential criterion towards proper execution of the CE principle in SC. In this research, we have constructed a framework for evaluating the supplier concerning the CE implementation. Further, this research identifies the criterion and sub-criterion, which are pertinent for evaluating the supplier in CE context. Fuzzybased 'Criteria Importance Through Inter-Criteria Correlation (CRITIC)' method is justifiably applied to determine the aggregated weights of the criteria. Finally, 'Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS)' method is used to determine the suppliers' ranking in the Indian automobile industry. Six criteria and 24 sub-criteria are obtained as per recent literature and then inputs from experts. 'Environment' criterion came out as the most favourable criterion with a subjective weight of 0.230. The current research is one of the first such attempts to provide criteria for supplier selection in a CE environment. The developed framework would help organisations in implementing CE-based supplier selection. The identified criteria and sub-criteria would provide organisations with means to evaluate suppliers and help suppliers develop an effective and efficient CE based on the SC.

A systematic review of the critical success factors for implementing circular economy in construction projects

The transition to a circular economy in the construction industry provides enormous opportunities to decouple construction activities, processes, and practices from finite consumption of natural resources and environmental externalities. Circular construction leverages the interconnected models of narrowing, slowing, and closing resource loops to minimize extractive and wasteful use of natural resources, eliminate waste and pollution from the outset, and retain construction products and materials in use for a longer duration. However, construction practitioners have struggled to implement circular economy principles into construction projects successfully. This study systematically reviewed the critical success factors for implementing circular construction projects. The results revealed 51 critical success factors for circular construction projects, clustered into six typologies: technological (n = 10, Σ = 93, μ = 9.30), supply chain (n = 14, Σ = 84, μ = 6.00), organizational (n = 9, Σ = 82, μ = 9.11), institutional (n = 7, Σ = 43, μ = 6.14), stakeholder success (n = 7, Σ = 73, μ = 10.43), and management success factors (n = 4, Σ = 27, μ = 6.75). A Pareto analysis revealed 30 vital critical success factors for circular construction projects. Thus, the study established the first comprehensive set of critical success strategies for circular construction projects and enriches the knowledge of construction organizations and project team members on how best to implement circular economy principles in construction projects.
