The purpose of this study is to examine the readiness of Building technology graduates for the construction industry from four selected Polytechnics in Southwestern Nigeria. With a random sampling technique, a sample of 170 Higher National Diploma Building technology graduates was collected to assess their competence areas in readiness for a future in the construction industry. Results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Kruskal-Willis H test). The findings of the study revealed that the level of preparedness of Building graduates for the construction industry is encouraging but shows a declining trend in practical capabilities in carrying out building surveys, preparation of site reports and preparation of reliable estimates for materials, labor and cost of construction works. The study results also presented no significant difference (r>0.05) in the competency of Building technology graduates based on their institutional training in three competency areas (capability to carry setting out of all kinds of buildings, understanding and interpreting structural drawings, understanding, and interpreting architectural drawings). However, the study also presented a significant difference (r<0.005) in seven competency areas of Building technology graduates based on their institutional training. The study recommends curricula restructuring to focus more on practical training and professional collaboration with the industry.

Construction productivity defines the wealth of a nation as well as the well-being of its citizenry, because it plays a critical rolein the overall economic development of a nation. However, there has been a reported decline in labour productivity which has led to poor delivery of construction projects. This issue has been among the leadingcauses of schedule and cost overruns, quality issues, claims and conflicts, especially in key capital construction projects globally.Poor labour productivity is attributed to the reaction of workers on certain factors. The purpose of this study is to assess construction tradespeople perception of the factors motivating labour productivity on construction projects. To achieve this purpose, semi-structured interview and questionnaire, and a stratified purposeful sampling technique was adopted to gather data from construction tradespeople in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Datagathered through survey from106construction tradespeople, were analysed using frequencies, percentage and factor analysis.The data gathered from 25 interviewees were analysed using thematic analysis. The study concluded that major factors motivating construction tradespeople productivity on construction projects are knowledge and salary-related factors; job security and planning related factors; health, safety and promotion related factor;overtime and work area condition; team building and equipment factors; supervision and recognition factors; management and teamwork factors; and materials and work methods.Furthermore, the implication of the role of financial and non-financial motivatorsis brought to the fore in ensuring improved and sustainable labour productivity on construction projects.The study recommended that construction organisations should utilise a good mix of financial and non-financial productivity motivators in getting thebest out of their employees, especially the site operatives.

Purpose The global construction industry is significant to economic development, whereas the sector, particularly its small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have continued to suffer from low labour productivity for decades. This has given rise to the concern of relevant construction stakeholders on the need to address the challenges undermining labour productivity growth in construction. Hence, this study aims to conduct a meta-data analysis of factors that hamper productivity growth of construction SMEs in developing countries. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of existing studies relative to factors affecting construction labour productivity (CLP) is presented. Thereafter, eight developing countries-based studies that are specific to SMEs were selected for meta-data analysis using relative importance index values from the studies. Findings The essential productivity influencing factors were identified and quantitative data of the selected studies were synthesised. The effect summaries derived from the meta-data analysis revealed that the most significant factors that negatively affect CLP amongst SMEs include: workers’ skills, inadequate training, rework, management style and incentive to labour. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to scientifically analysed secondary data relative to SME contractors in developing countries. Practical implications The findings of the study can be adopted by construction stakeholders to evolve productivity growth policies for construction SMEs in developing countries. Originality/value Synthesis of quantitative data of different studies has lent deeper insight into a more realistic and scientific precision of factors affecting labour productivity of construction SMEs.
