Critical Assessment 8: Outstanding issues in electropulsing processing

Abstract: The processing of materials using electrical pulses utilises effects other than resistive heating to stimulate changes in their microstructure and hence the properties. The direct effect of electropulsing has not, however, been fully understood. There remain issues that delay the industrialisation of the method and there are gaps in the scientific understanding of mechanisms. The thermodynamic description of electropulsing is based on a few oversimplified geometric models. The corresponding kinetic description… Show more

“…EPT has been used for auxiliary turning operations to enhance the plastic deformation and cutting performance of the workpiece [ 39 , 40 ]. In addition, electropulsing could induce the redistribution of particles in liquid suspensions and helps clean molten materials from insulating oxides [ 41 , 42 ] and electrically neutral non-metallic inclusions [ 43 ]. By combining EPT with other material processing techniques, such as conventional heat treatment [ 44 ], high energy electron beam treatment [ 45 ] and ultrasonic shock treatment [ 46 , 47 ], enhanced material properties and performance could be achieved, including improved dynamic ductility of alloys due to the formation of ultra-fine grains microstructure and higher surface quality of alloys [ 48 , 49 , 50 ].…”

“…7 In a recent editorial, I commented on the promise of the method, which thus far has not had any major exploitation, and on the need for a theoretical framework that is quantitatively predictive. 8 To explore these ideas further, a critical assessment was commissioned, 9 the conclusions from which can be paraphrased as follows:…”
