Criteria for Quantitative and Qualitative Data Integration

Abstract: Many studies have emphasized the need and importance of a mixed-methods approach for evaluation of clinical information systems. However, those studies had no criteria to guide integration of multiple data sets. Integrating different data sets serves to actualize the paradigm that a mixed-methods approach argues; thus, we require criteria that provide the right direction to integrate quantitative and qualitative data. The first author used a set of criteria organized from a literature search for integration of… Show more

“…Questionnaires are partially based on the results of the qualitative studies; important or ambiguous topics that emerged during the interviews will be added, if possible, to the quantitative part by means of a questionnaire that is linked to this specific topic. This two-step approach to the survey adds to the validity of inquiry (Lee & Smith, 2012) as well as creates an awareness of protective processes that are culturally relevant or implicit. Adolescents (100 Dutch adolescents and 100 young refugees aged between 12 and 16 years) were asked to fill out questionnaires about personal and social factors, traumatic events, posttraumatic stress reactions, emotional and behavioural problems, quality of life, and posttraumatic growth (see Table 1 for the list of questionnaires).…”

“…This study was part of a larger integrated, sequential and mixed methods study [24][25][26][27] conducted in three phases. 28 29 The focus of this report is the preimplementation phase in which the perceptions, readiness and key barriers and facilitators to the uptake of the e-Consult system were explored to identify key issues fundamental to its implementation and widespread application.…”

“…Advocates indicate that many areas of inquiry can be enriched by triangulating qualitative and quantitative data (Polit andBeck 2012, Moule andHek 2011). However, some researchers oppose a mixedmethods approach, stating that quantitative and qualitative methods have been developed using different paradigms and that each method has conflicting assumptions (Lee and Smith 2012).…”
