Crisis resource management training for an anaesthesia faculty: a new approach to continuing education

Abstract: A unique and highly rated anaesthesia faculty course was created; participation made the faculty staff eligible for malpractice premium reductions. Self-reported CRM behaviours in participants' most significant difficult or critical events indicated an improvement in performance. These data provide indirect evidence supporting the contention that this type of training should be more widely promoted, although more definitive measures of improved outcomes are needed.

“…Our findings should be further evaluated to pinpoint and define the learning deficiencies for trauma and for resuscitation. 18,19 Although simulation in anesthesia has become part of the teaching curricula, [19][20][21] only 14% of simulation centers use it for evaluation of competence. 22 Reasons for this include lack of standardized, valid, and reliable tests.…”

“…The positive learner perception of the pilot program was comparable to new simulation curricula in other disciplines, such as pediatrics, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and emergency medicine. [15][16][17][18][19][20] Finally, we were able to evaluate the level of learner interest in a simulation program before investing the resources necessary to implement a similar mandatory program. A comparable program with mandatory attendance for a class of 75 interns would require approximately 60 sessions with 4 to 6 learners at each session.…”

“…36 In het artikel van Blum et al werd bijvoorbeeld door participanten aangegeven dat zij graag zouden zien dat de training iedere 18 tot 24 maanden wordt herhaald. 51 Daarnaast mag simulatie geen vervanging zijn van het leren in de klinische setting, maar moet het een aanvulling zijn hierop. 35 Simulatietraining is geen doel op zich maar een middel, dat kan worden ingezet over het gehele continue spectrum van de medische opleiding.…”
