Crisis resolution, competence, and empowerment: A service model for women

Abstract: The victimization that occurs when women have experienced sexual violence often disrupts their connection to community, producing feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. Traditional models of crisis intervention and self-help assist women in their exploration of the personal consequences of this victimization, facilitating a healing process. Women can move on through a developmental growth process leading to competence and empowerment. This paper presents a promotive service model for women to help them mo… Show more

“…In order to maximize usage of these newly gained qualities, women must be able to critically analyze the institutionalized structures and power relations that maintain patriarchal privilege (Brown & Ziefert, 1988;Hicks, 1990). The formulation of strategies to effect change (Kieffer, 1983(Kieffer, -1984Rappaport, 1985) and the linkage of personal competence with the political realm (Brown & Ziefert, 1988) strengthens one's participatory competence. Development of this consciousness in women then provides the impetus for empowerment at the group and institutional levels.…”

“…Qualities associated with personal empowerment are often those that women lack; attaining such skills allows women the opportunity to overcome attributes and self-perceptions that limit their potential (Polk, 1974;Stromquist, 1988;Swift & Levin, 1987). Personal empowerment thus represents a foundational base from which women can eventually challenge their disadvantaged position (Brown & Ziefert, 1988). ' The process of empowerment for women may occur in a variety of settings, ranging from nonformal education (Stromquist, 1988) and feminist movement organizations (Riger, 1983(Riger, -1984 to women's experiences in such settings as churches, clubs, and voluntary organizations (Rappaport, 1983(Rappaport, -1984(Rappaport, , 1985.…”

“…By working together, we could outline the problem, present the current behavioral prescription (e.g., practicing safer sex), and promote ways of managing the problem. Such a process follows Bandura's (1990) emphasis on the role of self-efficacy in facilitating changes in health behaviors as well as drawing from the recent work on empowerment (Brown & Ziefert, 1988;Rappaport, 1984;Wallerstein, 1992).…”

“…When women feel that they have something to contribute, instead of being perceived as inadequate, their self-esteem is raised and their sense of self is affirmed (Brown & Ziefert, 1988;Gutierrez, 1990). These self-esteem variables correlate highly to positive behavioral changes involving HIV-prevention behavior (Catania et al, 1989).…”
