Crisis or adaptation? Migration and climate change in a context of high mobility

Abstract: The impacts of climate change are likely to affect population distribution and mobility. While alarmist predictions of massive fl ows of refugees are not supported by past experiences of responses to droughts and extreme weather events, predictions for future migration fl ows are tentative at best. What we do know is that mobility and migration are key responses to environmental and nonenvironmental transformations and pressures. They should therefore be a central element of strategies of adaptation to climate… Show more

“…A redução de carbono biótico no ambiente e a redução da disponibilidade de água, vista pela maior taxa de evapotranspiração do que transpiração, motivam as dinâmicas populacionais humanas e se inicia, então, o processo de migração (Tacoli, 2009;Saier, 2010). Porém, isso não ocorreu na área de estudo.…”

“…Moreover, when perceived as a response to poverty, social marginalization and to global environmental change, migration serves as a means to reduce vulnerability and increase livelihood security (Black, Bennett, Thomas, & Beddington 2011;Scheffran, Marmer, & Sow 2012;Tacoli, 2009).…”

“…Climate change could gradually make livelihoods less viable. One response to this could be temporary or permanent migration, and there is already evidence that mobility is a crucial strategy for reducing vulnerability to a wide range of climate-and non-climate-related risks (Tacoli, 2009). Ability to migrate is not identified in discussions of adaptive capacity, but there is significant evidence that it is an important household strategy in achieving long-term improvements in livelihood (Deshingkar, 2006;Deshingkar et al, 2008).…”
