Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus: Genetic Analysis and Tick Survey in Turkey

Abstract: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne virus in the family Bunyaviridae, genus Nairovirus. The virus is transmitted to humans through infected tick bites or from direct contact with viremic animals or humans. In the present study, a total of 1,015 adult ticks were collected from cattle (603 specimens), sheep (17 specimens), and goats (395 specimens) in the Kelkit Valley in Turkey. Four tick species were recognized on the animals in the surveyed region. The most abundant species were Rhip… Show more

“…During the last decade, the presence of infections due to the CCHF virus has also been demonstrated in endemic regions in Turkey (8,16,23). The transmission of the infection into non-endemic areas of the country has been studied (4,6).…”

“…Serological evidence for the presence of the infection in Turkey has long been reported (13), and the first clinical human cases were described in 2002 (WHO) (20). These first cases were from the middle Black Sea region of the country, which is endemic for the infection (16). Since 2003, an increasing number of human cases have been reported, with a fatality rate of approximately 5% (Turkish Ministry of Health).…”

“…In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of tick-borne infection cases in Turkey; thus, the scientific studies on ticks have focused mostly on CCHF cases (Tonbak et al, 2006;Albayrak et al, 2010;Gunes et al, 2011;Hekimoglu et al, 2012;Tekin et al, 2012). In fact, continuous scanning of tick distribution is crucial in order to monitor tick-borne diseases and develop effective control strategies against them.…”

“…Since the emergence of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Turkey in 2002, there have been many studies focused on CCHF cases (Tonbak et al, 2006;Albayrak et al, 2010;Tekin et al, 2012;Yesilbag et al, 2013). In spite of increased case reports of tick bites and CCHF cases, information regarding the presence and distribution of certain species is still limited.…”
