Existing research suggests that victimization risk is higher among urban residents. Violence against women is a notable exception in this trend. While the literature does indicate that rural women are at equal risk for violent victimization, it does not differentiate between types of non-urban spaces (exurbs, suburbs, small towns, dispersed rural). We use a five-category measure of rural-urban location articulated land use to disentangle victim–offender relationship distribution using a female victim sample from the 1996–2005 United States National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). In the most rural areas (dispersed rural locations), women are most likely to be victimized by friends or acquaintances. The proportion of women victimized by strangers in dispersed rural locations is very low. As urbanicity increases, so does the proportion of women victimized by strangers. The findings indicate that victim–offender relationships may be dictated by proximity. In dispersed rural locations, there are comparatively fewer people unknown to the victim than in central city locations. Consequently, proximity dictates that offenders in dispersed rural locations are unlikely to be strangers. The articulated land use measure ensures that the differences between types of rural and suburban locations are identified. Future research should consider the impact of proximity on rural victimization and increased specificity in rural measurements.

Crime has become one of the most serious security concerns confronting many nations in the World. Crime is widespread in both rural and urban areas, but it is less prevalent in both. Hence, crime prevention strategies are key in any country. In Tennessee State, Crime has been a growing problem. Hence, the study examined the crime prevention strategies employed to combat its widespread. The study was literature based. The study found that some crime prevention strategies include using ICT, holding meetings and increasing government public participation. The importance of increasing government public participation is that criminals are within the society and, in some instances, known. It becomes easy to find criminals if society is involved in the process. Security meetings reduce deviant activities and encourage compliant behaviours of their members through effective socialization about criminal awareness. The research concluded that security meetings, the use of ICT and increasing government public participation are essential components of effective crime prevention. Leaders travelling from one location to another and raising understanding of the role of communities, government policing agencies and the community in security reduces the chances of crime. The study recommended effective strategies be employed to reduce crime in Tennessee State. There should be no use of a single strategy when combating crime. Residents in local areas should be directly involved in policing exercises. A culture of shared responsibility and decision-making, and persistent commitment from both government policing agencies and the community, is required. Through the relevant Ministry, the government should fully understand the mechanisms that create, alter, and lower the insecurity issue through security meetings. Identifying which social group is severely affected by the problem is also critical.

PurposeThe purpose is to understand how farmers in rural American communities perceive crime, safety and policing.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey, adapted from a version used in Victoria, Australia (Harkness, 2017), was modified and administered through social media and farming organizations throughout three US states. The survey covers topics relating to crime and victimization, feelings of safety or fear in rural areas, policing practices and trust in police in their areas and any crime prevention practices that respondents use.FindingsWith nearly 1,200 respondents and four scales investigated, results indicate that those respondents with more favorable views of law enforcement and the criminal justice system had the highest fear of crime, those who had been prior victims of crime had a higher fear of crime than those who did not, those with higher community involvement had higher fear of crime, and those from Nebraska compared to Colorado had higher fear of crime.Research limitations/implicationsA better understanding of the agricultural community’s perceptions of crime, safety and policing will aid law enforcement in community policing efforts and in farm crime investigation and prevention. Limitations of the study, including the distribution method will be discussed.Originality/valueFarm- and agriculture-related crimes have serious financial and emotional consequences for producers and local economies. Stereotypes about rural areas being “safe with no crime” are still prevalent. Rural American farmers’ perceptions of crime, safety and police are largely absent from the literature and are important for improving farm crime prevention.
