Crew Resource Management Training Research, Practice, and Lessons Learned

Abstract: Crew resource management (CRM) training was introduced to the aviation community in 1979. Since then it has evolved and matured and is now being applied in a number of domains, including health care and offshore oil production. There is abundant literature resulting from research in the area, but there is no recent comprehensive review of the origins, current state, and future direction of CRM. The purpose of this chapter is to perform that review and provide the reader with an understanding of the research, p… Show more

“…Based on the results of the present study and on the plethora of literature from more than two decades of CRM research and practice (e.g. Cannon-Bowers et al 1995;Salas et al 1999;Salas et al 2006a;Flin et al2008;Helmreich et al 1999;Salas et al 2006b), we would like to make the following recommendations for BRM training design and implementation:…”

“…Reviews and meta-analyses show that CRM training is generally effective , it is positively perceived by participants and consistently improves teamwork-related attitudes (Salas et al 2006b;O'Connor et al 2008). While CRM training induces changes in knowledge and behaviour, effect sizes vary considerably (Ibid.)…”

“…The communities implementing CRM training must demand it. We need a mandate compelling researchers to conduct more robust research, access to the data (e.g., open cockpits, operating rooms) and resources (e.g., money) to make this a reality (Salas et al, 2006a). Although a significant effect of CRM training was only found at the attitude level, the findings from the meta-analysis of CRM effectiveness are encouraging.…”

“…Teaching methods include lectures, practical exercises, role playing, case studies, and video films of accident reenactments. To date, there is no standard set of competencies (i.e., knowledge, skills, and attitudes) that should be included as a part of CRM training, and wide array of concepts have been deemed "CRM" (Salas, Wilson, Burke, Wightman & Howse, 2006a). The literature tells us that CRM courses typically cover core topics such as teamwork, leadership, situation awareness, decision making, communication, and personal limitations (Flin & Martin, 2001;Salas et al, 2006a).…”
