Cretaceous to present-day tectonic reconstructions of Zealandia

Abstract: Reconstructions of the past relative positions of northern and southern Zealandia provide important constraints on the orientation and amount of strain accumulated between rigid plates within the Australia–Pacific plate tectonic circuit. This configuration of plates ultimately determines how, where and when sedimentary basins formed during and since continental breakup along the eastern margin of Gondwana. Although the first-order geometry of Zealandia is well established, uncertainty remains regarding plate m… Show more

“…Rifting and crustal extension during the period ~105–83 Ma has been widely recognised across Zealandia (Laird, 1993; Sutherland et al, 2001) and is summarised by Strogen et al (2017). Extension in the GSB was mainly in a present‐day NW‐SE direction (Sahoo et al, 2020), which when restored to a mid‐Cretaceous reconstruction would be roughly NNE‐SSW (Seebeck et al, 2018; Strogen et al, 2017, 2019). This parallels extension directions elsewhere in the basins of southern Zealandia (Strogen et al, 2017), and those seen in Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica at this time (e.g.…”
