Creep-Fatigue Effects in Structural Materials used in Advanced Nuclear Power Generating Systems

Abstract: We review various aspects of time-dependent fatigue behavior of a number of structural alloys in use or planned for use in advanced nuclear power generating systems. Materials included are types 304 and 316 stainless steel, Fe-2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel, and alloy 8Q0H. Examples of environmental effects, including both chemical and physical interaction, are presented for a number of environments. The environments discussed are high-purity liquid sodium, high vacuum, air, impure helium, and irradiation damage, includi… Show more

“…However, the environmental role in producing accelerated crack growth in 316SS is not well understood (Brinkman 1980). Although very long-term aging data are not available, aging of Type 304 stainless steel for 1000-5000 h at 538-649°C (1000-both creep ductility at a given rupture time and creep-fatigue life at a given tensile hold time, relative to those of unaged specimens ).…”
