Creativity Training and the Stability and Internal Consistency of the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory

Abstract: In his 1986 analytic review of the first ten years of research on adaption-innovation theory, Mudd commented on the importance of continued research on the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory. Suggestions pertinent to the present study involved an examination of the stability of the instrument as well as the test-retest reliability of the full scale and subscales. A Lindquist Type III analysis of variance was used to examine the influence of creativity training on the stability of the Kirton full scale scores… Show more

“…However, intrinsic motivation of employees was not found to have any significant impact on this relationship. Murdock et al (1993) tried to find the impact of creativity training on the performance. The experiment explored that creativity training can facilitate development of creativity among trainees.…”

“…However, when stability is considered, the intervention methodology powerfully demonstrates how firmly the individual preference is held. The studies by Murdock, et al (1993) and Watts (1985) gave stability coefficients within the same range as the nonintervention studies (i.e., 0.82 to 0.84). The study by Goldsmith and Kerr (1991) testing only 34 students yielded a lower stability coefficient (r = 0.69).…”

“…Three studies (Goldsmith & Kerr, 1991;Murdock, Isaksen, & Lauer, 1993;Watts, 1985) have used a training-intervention methodology where over periods of up to 15 weeks different attempts to modify individuals' stylistic preference towards the more Innovative interventions have been made during the time between the first and second administrations. This methodology is theoretically questionable in that a training programme designed to modify a potentially stable personal preference seems doomed from the start.…”

“…This research was conducted among several different populations, ranging from school children (e.g., Taylor, 1994) to college students, (see also Taylor, 1994) and to adults (e.g., Clapp and de-Ciantis, 1989). Problem-solving styles were found to be largely stable and not modifiable (see also Clapp, 1993;Murdock et al, 1993). However, the procedures used to modify the styles may have been inadequate.…”
