Creativity and Verbal Ability: A Direct Examination of Their Relationship

Abstract: SUMMARY. The ' creativity ' as an entity independent of intelligence and aptitudes closely related to intelligence (Cureton, 1964 ;Thorndike, 1963 ;Wodtke, 1964). It is quite clear that although the problem of separating creativity and intelligence has been raised frequently (Barron, 1963 ;Getzels and Jackson, 1962 ; Guilford, 1950 ;McNemar, 1964 ;Mednick and Mednick, 1965 ;Torrance, 1959 ; Wdlach and Kogan, 1964 ; Yamamoto, , 1966, no adequate resolution has yet occurred. The persistence of the problem is … Show more

“…If a linear relationship exists between the correlated variables, the regression line can be used to find the variance error of estimate. This method was recommended and used in a study by Ginsburg & Whittemore (1968). The important difference from previous methods is that a statistic which relates to the whole scale, in the form of the regression line, is first found and then used with the arbitrary scales.…”

“…879]." It is hardly surprising that this "fan shaped" hypothesis, more recently reiterated by Guilford (1967b), was not confirmed by Mednick and Andrews (1967) and by Ginsberg and Whittemore (1968), who found a positive linear relationship throughout the range. The creativity measure was the Remote Associates Test which has been severely criticized as being a measure of convergent thinking rather than the divergent thinking attributed to creatives.…”

“…The fact is that there is a great deal of divergence in opinions about the proper formulation of these processes and the implications of differences found on measures like those employed by Wallach & Wing. Findings from studies like those of Cropley (81) or Ginsburg & Whittemore (128) suggest that the separation between intelligence and creativity which Wallach and his associates [ef. Ward (342) ; Pankove & Kogan (274)] are attempting to draw may be a function of sampling biases or restrictions in range on their test measures.…”
