Creative practices in the design studio culture: collaboration and communication

Abstract: For the purpose of developing collaborative support in design studio environments, we have carried out ethnographic fieldwork in professional and academic product design studios. Our intention was to understand design practices beyond the productivity point of view and take into account the experiential, inspirational and aesthetical aspects of design practices. Using examples from our fieldwork, we develop our results around three broad themes by which design professionals support communication and collaborat… Show more

“…Studios are often investigated within a professional or technological context rather than an educational one and in disciplines other than Communication Design (Shaughnessy & Brook 2009;Vyas et al 2013). However, 'there is a demand for research that uses the studio or workshop as a primary site of investigation ' (Woodrow 2013, 3).…”

“…Links between pedagogy, student engagement and space can be seen in the research studies of Fisher (2005) In design research, studies appear to be inclined towards practice-led explorations within studio environments. “…For example, office walls and desks are typically full of notes, post-it, sketches, prototypes and physical models. The material and physical aspects embedded in the design studio such as designer's practices, the use of artifacts and the space during collaboration, have a key role on the coordination of the creative activities [23]. Design artifacts (e.g.…”

“…Distributed design activities cannot depend anymore on the collaboration mechanisms facilitated by the spatial and artifact properties of the design studio. Artifacts have a key role in the way designers coordinate their team activities [15,13]. Extra emphasis must be given on maintaining the highly material character of design practice through digital artifacts.…”
