Creative elements: network-based predictions of active centres in proteins and cellular and social networks

Abstract: Active centres and hot spots of proteins have a paramount importance in enzyme action, protein complex formation and drug design. Recently a number of publications successfully applied the analysis of residue networks to predict active centres in proteins. Most real-world networks show a number of properties, such as small-worldness or scale-free degree distribution, which are rather general features of networks, from molecules to society at large. Using analogy I propose that existing findings and methodology… Show more

“…This position and the extremity in network dynamics is typical to the creative elements defined by Csermely in 2008 [Csermely, 2008]. Creative elements are the least predictable, highly mobile elements occupying various locally and globally central positions in the network [Csermely, 2008].…”

“…In 2008 one of the authors (P.C.) called the special position connecting multiple, very distant modules, as the position of 'creative nodes', since it resembles to the position of highly creative people in social networks [80]. Creativity has many forms.…”

“…Creativity is not always useful. A creative person may be highly unpredictable and unreliable, since one may never know whether the creative person will accomplish the task he/she was given, or will leave it unfinished, and will jump to another project, which currently excites him/her much more [80,81]. Chaperones (taken them one-by-one and not as a population) are highly unpredictable and unreliable, too.…”
