Creative Accounting or Creative Destruction? Firm-level Productivity Growth in Chinese Manufacturing

Abstract: We present the first comprehensive set of firm-level total factor productivity estimates for China's manufacturing sector that spans her entry into WTO. We find that productivity growth is among the highest compared to other countries. For our preferred estimate, the weighted average annual productivity growth for incumbents is 2.7% for a gross output production function and 7.7% for a value added production function over the period [1998][1999][2000][2001][2002][2003][2004][2005][2006]. Of the various sensiti… Show more

“…In the LVA, TFPG is taken as a latent variable, and in the POA, also called Frontier 6 Production Function Approach (FPFA), TFP change arises not only from technological innovation but also from the improvements in technical efficiency, allocative efficiency and the scale effect (Brummer et al, 2006;Jin et al, 2010;Brandt et al, 2011;Li and Liu, 2011).…”

“…A basic concordance table shows only slight changes of products between new and old 2-digit divisions on the 3-digit level. 14 Matching of firms to find the broken ID-links is based on background variables such as telephone number, industrial sector, zip code etc, and follows the coding practice provided in the online appendix of Brandt et al (2012). Codes are adjusted for about 2% of the firms.…”
