Creation of 3-Dimensional Prostate Cancer Maps: Methodology and Clinical and Research Implications

Abstract: We have developed a methodology for creation of 3DPCM. Modification of the radiotherapy contours, based on the 3DPCM coregistered with pretreatment magnetic resonance imaging, covers the areas at high risk of recurrence. The 3DPCM could become an important clinical and research tool for urologists, pathologists, radiologists, and oncologists.

“…There are many algorithms available to build volumetric structures from stacked 2D data. For PCa lesions, most reported are simply stacking the slices [ 12 ] and extrapolating the histopathologic data over the entire slice thickness [ 31 , 32 ]. More sophisticated algorithms use radial-basis functions [ 33 ] or spline functions [ 29 ] to smoothly interpolate the histopathologic data between the slices.…”

“…Overall, "XXXX-Anonymized for Review" showed a moderate acute and late GU and GI toxicity rate (14,23). Consequently, a more pronounced impact of deviations on toxicity is assumable in more escalated SRT dose concepts or definitive prostate RT schedules (higher RT doses) or when larger CTV volumes are treated (usage of other than EORTC delineation guidelines) (27).…”

“…These structures are visible in postoperative imaging, and consequently, the adequate delineation seems to be easier to achieve. However, the application of alternative guidelines results in larger CTVs, potentially affecting toxicity and tumor control rates (27). For instance, the currently published reworked GETUG guidelines showed good user-friendliness and promising target volume coverage (34,35).…”

“…For the 3D reconstruction of prostatic malignancy from the 2D slices, the interpolation algorithms reported in the literature range from sparsely stacking the histological data imposed on the photos [22], or simply extrapolating the tumour contour over the entire slice thickness [36,37], to spline interpolations of the edges [32]. Many other 2D contour-based surface-reconstruction algorithms are designed for medical purposes and might be applied to PCa (e.g.…”
