“…This search has already begun in the past decade. Researchers around the world are striving to develop new (digitally-based) urban planning and design methods and techniques that enable more flexible and quicker response to unpredictable changes in space and time (Batty, 2013;Beirão, Duarte, & Stouffs, 2011;DeVries, Tabak, & Achten, 2005). Rather than designing a final solution (master plan), we should design its control system (Verebes, 2013a) and let the solution gradually evolve itself through time.…”

“…In the majority of cases, shape grammar research has tended to produce only a single grammar for a given corpus of work, but we feel it is the comparison of different grammars for similar or partially overlapping corpora that will yield greater insight into questions of style and representation. Moreover, this research is seen as an initial step in the development of a generic grammar for housing, a concept applied in urban contexts by Beirão et al [2]. It is hoped that by breaking the tacitly assumed equation of a single grammar with a single style, significant steps may be made toward this goal.…”

“…Beirão et al [2], working on urban shape grammars, proposed a generic grammar for design and illustrated an application for urban design. Stiny [3] showed how shape grammar rules may be classified into a finite set of rule types or schemas expressed algebraically to suggest how different grammars may share a common structure.…”
