The new mobile technology, 5G, challenges the current scenario in communications by overcoming the flaws of currently working 4G. Such new technology offers to smart cities and intelligent transportation systems a new way to become fully integrated by allowing massive simultaneous connections and ubiquity of network, even under high mobility situations or dense populated areas. In this way, 5G will become a key enabler for real Internet of Things and its corresponding Internet of Vehicles. This discussion is aimed at providing, in a comprehensive manner, how 5G technology will impact on smart cities, intelligent transportation systems –including autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles– and vehicular communications, its technical, economic and legal challenges, in the following years.

The present article focuses on the research and development planning for innovative railway systems. Within such a general framework, the specific objectives of the research have been defined within the framework of a large Intelligent Railway System project in Hungary. Our theoretical research work at the university is combined with practical experience gained at the Hungarian State Railways. In the course of this research work, the development of an intelligent railway system has been investigated by leveraging on the fruitful cooperation between academic and industrial partners, in order to promote the application and integration possibilities of the development results, as well as the introduction of innovative components in the railway system. In such a context, this article discusses the research plan, preliminary and long-term expected results, sharing objectives and experiences with the aim of providing novel views in an extremely current and challenging field of research.

This article proposes a multilevel bike-sharing assessment framework based on the concept of public value. This approach makes it possible to combine customer satisfaction with the transport service system with determinants of demand for bicycle services in the form of value. The framework aims to evaluate the parameters of public bike systems (PBS) that determine user value, and that co-create user value, system value, and social and ecological value, to identify the characteristics of the bicycle that need improvement in order to meet users’ needs and optimize quality. The framework uses empirical verification through satisfaction surveys of PBS users in Lodz, Poland. The results of the study were subjected to factor analysis, which revealed four groups of factors that satisfy public bike users: (1) impact on the health, environment, mobility and traffic in the city, (2) reliability, and comfort, (3) intramodality, (4) price and technical availability.
