This paper investigates the geographical and organizational patterns of scientific collaboration, in terms of co-authored scientific articles, in the Danish-German border region of Southern Jutland-Schleswig. The motivation behind the approach lies in the fact that scientific collaboration in border regions, in general, and the studied region, in particular, has rarely been discussed in the academic literature.The integration model of cross-border regional innovation systems provides the conceptual framework for the task. The paper, thus, gives methodological insights for the measurement of cross-border integration of knowledge infrastructures. The analysis reveals that collaborating with partners close but on the opposite side of the border is rare. Instead, cross-border collaboration takes place with partners from more faraway international research organizations. The reasons behind this can be found in the science bases-arguably more than from historic, linguistic or ethnic reasons-of the adjacent sides of the border. The research fields that the local scientists are engaged in seem to be too different between the Danish and German sides of the border region to foster large numbers of co-authored publications and, thus, the knowledge infrastructure of the border region can be considered as weakly integrated.

Cross-Border Integration through Contestation? Political Parties and Media in the Swiss–Italian Borderland

This article analyzes how, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, regional integration across an international border took place through political contestation. Although the crisis has been interpreted as leading to a revival of state borders, we show its differentiated impact on cross-border relationships at the heart of Western Europe, namely the Swiss-Italian borderland. A database encompassing over 1,800 articles published in 11 different print and online newspapers over two years (2010)(2011)(2012) allowed an analysis of the role played by political parties and the media as drivers of contestation. Our quantitative and qualitative analyses trace processes of both re-bordering ("Switzerland vs. Italy/the EU") and de-bordering (that is, integration across the border) through discourses prioritizing "the region." The wider implication from this study is that borderlands are subject to the same pushand pull-factors as states but that, additionally, a third dimension is present. Ignoring this intra-state center-periphery dimension means not fully capturing borderland dynamics, all the more so if political entrepreneurs skillfully seize spatial contention to advance their own conception of regional identity distinct from that of their nation-state.

This study of Dayak Bidayuh ethnic kinship system at the boundaries of Entikong and Tebedu is based on the issue of border area development, the issue of cultural extinction and cultural values, as well as the issue of cultural claims and cultural values. Besides, the existence of Bidayuh ethnic groups spread across Indonesia and Malaysia has become interesting to study and describe. The study used qualitative method by interviewing and observing people of Dayak Bidayuh in Sontas-Indonesia and Bidayauh in Entubuh-Malaysia. Based on the concept of kinship and border studies, this study shows that (1) Bidayuh Sontas Kinship System refers to the concept of kinship system with a unilateral lineage pattern, so that the Bidayuh Sontas nuclear family is part of an extended family; (2) Bidayuh Sontas has a transnational kinship pattern with Entubuh-Malaysia Bidayuh; (3) The presence of the State is the cause of the separation of Bidayuh Sontas citizenship from Bidayuh Entubuh; (4) When there is a marriage between them, the citizenship must be determined; and (5) Transnational kinship Bidayuh at the Entikong-Indonesia and Tebedu-Malaysia Border as a socio-cultural space phenomenon. An ethnic community that existed before the presence of state’s border is still continuing their daily lives, even though they have been constructed into different nationalities.
