Creating Fragility Functions for Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering

Abstract: The Applied Technology Council is adapting PEER's performance-based earthquake engineering methodology to professional practice. The methodology's damage-analysis stage uses fragility functions to calculate the probability of damage to facility components given the force, deformation, or other engineering demand parameter (EDP) to which each is subjected. This paper introduces a set of procedures for creating fragility functions from various kinds of data: (A) actual EDP at which each specimen failed; (B) boun… Show more

“…Nevertheless, in order to guarantee the correct flow of information from the input (the bridge population) to the output (damage estimate, loss assessment results, etc. ), the taxonomy should have a clear, detailed, collapsible, and expandable definition [10]. Some bridge taxonomies can be found in literature, such as the comprehensive work carried out within the SYNER-G project [9].…”

“…1). Porter method "A" [25] is employed to create the lognormal fragility curves according to the different intensity measures. Different IMs are adopted to plot the fragility curves [23] among the ones typically adopted in literature studies [26].…”
