The purpose of this corpus-based study was to investigate whether different sections in chemistry research articles, i.e., abstract, introduction, and results and discussion, rely on different sets of lexical bundles. Lexical bundles, associated with the above sections, were extracted from a corpus of 4 million words, comprising 1,185 chemistry research articles, using WordSmith Tools 5.0, and were categorized according to their functions. Altogether, 197 key bundles were identified in the three sections of chemistry research articles, 15 in the abstract, 99 in the introduction, and 83 in the results and discussion section. Two functions also emerged for lexical bundles in chemistry research articles, including purpose-oriented bundles, which refer to the aim/aims of the study; and literature-oriented bundles, which are used to refer to the literature. Altogether, the results showed that various sections in chemistry RAs are associated with specific sets of lexical bundles and, as such, deal with different rhetorical functions.

La fuerza en la construcción del marco teórico en artículos científicos: un análisis desde la lingüística sistémico-funcional Force in the Construction of the Theoretical Framework in Scientific Papers: A Systemic-Functional Linguistics Approach La force dans la construction du cadre théorique dans des articles scientifiques : une analyse partant de la linguistique systémique-fonctionnelle AbstractOpposite to what is traditionally stated, the theoretical framework often constitutes an independent section in research articles. Therein writers establish the theoretical tradition that supports their research and make an account of the theoretical and research developments in their discipline, specifically, in their topic of research, thus establishing a dialogue with other voices. This article examines how writers organize their theoretical framework by means of verbal clauses using the resources of the graduation subsystem proposed by the systemic functional linguistics to express force -which will help them to construct their authorial voice. This study analyzed the verbal clauses and the graduation resources of the theoretical frameworks in 20 research articles in Spanish language published in Colombian journals from the area of applied linguistics. Findings show the variety of resources deployed by writers in their verbal clauses to strengthen their commitment to their tenets, especially in prominent places of their theoretical framework, such as the macroTheme, hyperThemes, macroNew and hyperNew. Awareness of these theoretical framework features may be relevant for teaching academic writing.

Negotiating Theoretical Implication in Management Research Article Discussions

Demonstrating the theoretical contribution of new research is essential if the work is considered worthy of publication. This study draws upon genre-based research to explore the means by which theoretical implications are textually realized, negotiated, and promoted to readers in terms of their constituent components and argumentation patterns. By conducting a rhetorical analysis on the discussion section of 60 management research articles, the present study reveals theoretical implications are achieved through a combination of three constituent steps: Stating theoretical implication, Showcasing the theoretical background, and Justifying the theoretical value, and their related substeps. Three salient argumentation patterns are typically employed by research article (RA) authors to negotiate the theoretical value of the novel research. The findings indicate that to transform a new finding into disciplinary knowledge requires contextualizing that finding in a relevant theoretical domain, ascribing value to the finding and interpreting and explaining its meaning in terms of its theoretical insights. It also highlights pedagogical focus should illuminate the pathways for effectively defending and justifying the demonstrated theoretical value.
