Background Operating room nurses are one of the groups frequently expose to Disruptive Behaviors in different situations in the operating rooms that have different impacts on them and their performance. Recognition of DBs and their effects can help to offer strategies for better management of these behaviors. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Iranian operating room nurses regarding Disruptive Behaviors in operating room settings.Methods This is a descriptive qualitative study conducted in university hospitals in Tehran. The data were collected by deep semi-structured interviews with a total number of 17 operating room nurses selected purposefully. Finally, the data were analyzed with the conventional content analysis approach.Results Five categories were extracted from the study, including "activity in a poisonous atmosphere", "role subtraction", "escape to a safe margin", "adaptation to stay calm", and "Indirect confrontation". Finally, a theme was "struggle in a limbo Atmosphere caused by Disruptive Behaviors".Conclusion Under great pressure of surgeon’s Disruptive Behaviors, operating room nurses were struggling to maintain their balance and performance at possible. Considering the effect of Disruptive Behavior, it seems necessary to take training measures for improving team-working in operation room settings. Besides, monitoring and follow-up such behaviors according to negative effects is necessary.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) geht Hand in Hand mit der Digitalisierung der chirurgischen Aus- und Weiterbildung und wird in der Zukunft immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Anforderungen an KI in der chirurgischen Aus- und Weiterbildung sind vielfältig – genauso vielfältig sind ihre Einsatzmöglichkeiten. KI wird zunehmend im chirurgischen Curriculum berücksichtigt, auch wenn sie manchmal nicht auf den ersten Blick erkennbar ist und durch ihre Algorithmen eher im Hintergrund agiert. Die modernen digitalen Lehrmethoden und Sensortechnik eröffnen neue Wege für die Einbindung der KI in die chirurgische Aus- und Weiterbildung. Die ersten Schritte sind bereits implementiert – KI unterstützt die Erstellung von digitalem Bildmaterial zu Lehrzwecken oder erfasst mithilfe von Sensortechnik die chirurgische Leistung, um diese zu analysieren. Diverse Virtual- und Augmented-Reality-Simulatoren werden nicht nur als effektive Trainingswerkzeuge genutzt, sondern stellen vielmehr wertvolle Quellen für chirurgische Daten dar. All dies birgt enormes Potenzial für neue Erkenntnisse im Bereich der Lehrforschung, was zur Entwicklung von hocheffektiven und evidenzbasierten Lehrkonzepten beiträgt.

Background: Circulating nurses are key members of the surgical team and play an essential role in ensuring patient safety in the operating room. They need to use non-technical skills to provide safe and efficient patient care. This study was conducted to identify the behaviors related to the circulating nurse´s nontechnical skills from the existing literature.Methods: A search of the literature between 1990 and 2020 was conducted using online sources, including Web of Science, MEDLINE, CINHAL, Scopus, OVID, and Cochran library. Furthermore, the publications of the Association of peri-operative registered nurses (AORN) and the National Association of Theater Nurses (NATH) were consulted. Then the skills were grouped into known categories of non-technical skills.Results: Behaviors related to circulating nurse´s non-technical skills were extracted from the existing literature. Then they were grouped into seven domains, including communication, leadership, coping, teamwork, situational awareness, task management, and decision-making and problem-solving. Furthermore, several improper behaviors were extracted.Conclusion: Circulating nurses need to use non-technical skills from the beginning until the end of surgery to perform efficiently. There is still a need for future work to identifying circulating nurses’ non-technical skills using other types of studies to develop an assessment tool.
