Cracking, salinity and evaporation in mesoscale experiments on three types of tailings

Abstract: Evaporation is a phenomenon useful in assisting in the dewatering and stabilisation of various mineral wastes. This paper summarises findings on the influence of cracking and salinity on evaporation in mesoscale (1·0 m by 0·7 m in plan) deposition experiments on three different mineral slurries: thickened gold tailings, thickened oil sands tailings and oil sands tailings modified by in-line polymer flocculation. Each tailings exhibited substantially different evaporation related phenomena. In the two finer-gra… Show more

“…The shear strength parameters of cohesion and friction angle were obtained from the shear stress vs normal stress plots. The soil water retention curve was measured using WP4C dew point potentiometer, which gives the indirect measurement of soil suction using the kelvin equation considering the humidity of the air above soil sample [44]. The gravimetric water content of the soil sample is measured followed by the suction measurement.…”

“…Unsaturated compressibility and water retention were measured using axis-translation tests with volume change measurement for suctions <1 MPa, and measuring total suction using a dewpoint hygrometer for higher suctions (more details on these tests are reported in Simms et al 2017). Data are shown in Figure 1.…”

“…It is well understood and established that geotechnical engineering problems, such as high-volume change deposits (consolidation), stability of earthfill structures, and reclamation of tailings impoundments can best be analysed using fundamental principles of soil mechanics for both saturated and unsaturated soils. For example, unsaturated flow behaviour has been used to predict the dewaterability of thin and/or multilayer tailings deposits of high-density hard rock tailings as well as evaporation and drainage of tailings (Fisseha et al 2010;Qi et al 2016Qi et al , 2017aQi et al , 2017bSalfate et al 2010;Simms et al 2007Simms et al , 2010Simms et al , 2017. Large-strain consolidation properties and shear strength development for treated FFT was investigated under stress-controlled conditions (Fisseha et al 2017).…”
