A new polymeric adsorbent material based on polyethylene (PE) was prepared by photografting of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) as a positively chargeable monomer to a PE film. The effects of the experimental parameters, such as the pH value, temperature, and grafted amount on adsorption of chromium(VI) (Cr(VI)) ions were investigated for the DMAEMA‐grafted PE (PE‐g‐PDAMEMA) films. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at the initial pH value of 3.0 for a PE‐g‐PDMAEMA film with 1.8 mmol/g and the maximum adsorption capacity obtained was higher than or compatible to those of many of the other polymeric adsorbents prepared for Cr(VI) ions. The adsorption kinetics obeyed the mechanism of the pseudo‐second order kinetic model and adsorption of Cr(VI) ions on PE‐g‐PDMAEMA films was well expressed by the Langmuir isotherm model. A high Langmuir adsorption constant suggests that the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions occurs between protonated dimethylamino groups and HCrO4− ions mainly through the electrostatic interaction. Cr(VI) ions adsorbed were successfully desorbed from a PE‐g‐PDMAEMA film in solutions of NaCl, NH4Cl, NH4Cl containing NaOH, and NaOH and a PE‐g‐PDMAEMA film was regenerated and repeatedly used for adsorption of Cr(VI) ions without appreciable loss in the adsorption capacity. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of titanium cross-linked chitosan composite for efficient adsorption and detoxification of hexavalent chromium from water

For the simultaneous adsorption and detoxification of hexavalent chromium from water, a new titaniumchitosan (Ti-CTS) composite was synthesized through a metal-binding reaction between titanium ions and the chitosan biopolymer followed by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. The resultant composite was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, elemental mapping, SEM and XPS. The adsorption properties toward Cr(VI) were systematically investigated as a function of pH, dosage, initial concentration, contact time, temperature and co-existing ions. Experimental data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second order model with the maximum adsorption capacity of 171 mg g À1 . More attractively, the Cr(VI) could be effectively adsorbed and reduced to the less toxic Cr(III) by the Ti-CTS composite.The experimental results, FT-IR and XPS indicated that the possible removal mechanism of Cr(VI) onto the Ti-CTS composite was summarized into three steps: (i) Cr(VI) adsorption by electrostatic attraction (Ti 4+ and HCrO 4 À ) and ligand exchange (Cl À and HCrO 4 À ); (ii) Cr(VI) partly reduced to Cr(III); (iii) the re-adsorption of Cr(III) onto the Ti-CTS composite. 2015):Adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions with an effective adsorbent: cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposites in the presence of hydroxy-aluminum oligomeric cations, Desalination and Water Treatment, A B S T R A C TOn the basis of laboratory research, the adsorbent of cross-linked chitosan/Al 13 -pillared montmorillonite (CCPM) was examined on the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. In order to determine the effects of process parameters namely cross-linked chitosan-to-clay ratio, temperature, initial solution pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, adsorbent dose, and contact time on Cr(VI) uptake, batch studies were systematically conducted. Equilibrium data were applied to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and best described by the Langmuir isotherm model. It was shown that monolayer adsorption capacity was 15.67 mg/g of Cr(VI) obtained by the Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetics of adsorption correlated well with the pseudo-second-order equation. Moreover, the intra-particle diffusion model was applied to investigate the mechanism of adsorption. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters including free energy change, enthalpy change, and entropy change revealed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto CCPM was endothermic and spontaneous. The results suggest that CCPM is an effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.
