CP-violation in neutrino oscillations

Abstract: We study in a quantitative way CP-violating effects in neutrino oscillation experiments in the light of current and future data. Different scenarios with three and four neutrinos are worked out in detail including matter effects in long baseline experiments and it is shown that in some cases CP-violating effects could affect the analysis of a possible measurement. In particular in the three neutrino case we find that the effects can be larger than expected, at least in long-baseline $\nu_\mu\to\nu_e$. Moreover… Show more

“…It has been known for quite a long time that the most prominent oscillation channel for the study of threeflavor and matter effects in long-baseline experiments like neutrino factories is the so-called golden channel ν e → ν µ (Barger et al, 1980c;Cervera et al, 2000;De Rujula et al, 1999;Dick et al, 1999;Donini et al, 2000;Freund et al, 2000;Minakata and Nunokawa, 1997;Tanimoto, 1997). The exact formulas for the oscillation probabilities in matter are quite cumbersome due to the large number of parameters involved (Ohlsson and Snellman, 2000;Zaglauer and Schwarzer, 1988).…”

“…Such so-called neutrino factories should give a precise determination of θ 13 , possibly down to few×10 −4 , exploring also the important issue of leptonic CP violation [5].…”

“…∆m 2 21 = 0. We have thus two leading oscillation parameters (θ 23 and ∆m 2 ) and two sub-leading parameters (θ 13 and sgn ∆m 2 ) and no effects from the CP-violating phase δ [2]. This approximation is justified since CP-violating effects disappear quickly for the large distances considered [5].…”

“…This applies especially to the measurement of CPviolation at neutrino factories, where further advance information on the mixing parameters * Work supported by "Sonderforschungsbereich 375 für Astro-Teilchenphysik" der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. (especially θ 13 ) would be very important [2]. We perform therefore in this paper a global comparison of the generic physics potential of several experimental setups and we present the resulting precision of the leading oscillation parameters (∆m 2 31 and θ 23 ) as well as the sensitivity to the sub-leading parameters (θ 13 and the sign of ∆m 2 31 ).…”
