Cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., is an important warm-season legume grown primarily in the semi-arid tropics. The majority of cowpea is grown by subsistence farmers in West and Central sub-Saharan Africa, where its grain and leaves are valued as human food and its stover is used for animal forage. Like all crop plants, cowpea is subject to yield losses resulting from a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the important biotic constraints to cowpea production is parasitism by the root hemiparasitic weeds Striga gesnerioides (Willd.) [witchweed] and Alectra vogelii (Benth.). At least seven races of S. gesnerioides have been identified within the cowpea-growing regions of West Africa, based on host differential response and genetic diversity analysis. Several race-specific resistance genes have been identified and located to one of two linkage groups (LG1 and LG6) of the current cowpea genetic map. Molecular markers associated with race-specific resistance genes have been identified, and several sequence-confirmed amplified regions (SCARs) have been developed for use in marker-assisted selection and breeding strategies for rapid cowpea improvement. The mechanism of race-specific resistance in the cowpea-Striga interaction has also been examined, with several genes involved in phytohormone and general disease resistance signaling transduction observed to be differentially expressed in resistant and susceptible phenotypes. Results suggest that PR5 expression may be a useful marker of Striga infection, and that salicylic acid signaling appears to play a role in the cowpea-Striga interaction.

Orobanche foetida Poir. and O. crenata Forsk. are major constraints to faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivation in Tunisia. To evaluate the different levels of resistance of seven small-seeded faba bean genotypes to these parasitic weed species, three trials were conducted in fields infested and non-infested with O. foetida in the Oued Beja Agricultural Experimental Unit and O. crenata in an experimental field at Ariana of the National Institute of Agricultural Research during three cropping seasons. Compared to the susceptible cv. Badï, the seven genotypes showed moderate to high levels of resistance to both Orobanche species. The number and dry weight of emerged broomrapes and underground tubercles recorded on the new improved genotypes were lower than those recorded on released and resistant 'Najeh' and 'Baraca'. The parasitism index on the new genotypes varied from 2-6 times less than susceptible 'Badï' in both Oued-Beja and Ariana. Yield reduction due to O. foetida infection varied from 13.5% on genotype XAR-VF00.13-89-2-1-1-1-1 to 59.7% on 'Baraca', whereas the yield loss was about 92% on the susceptible control. Parasitic infection did not affect dry grain protein accumulation in the tested genotypes.

Cowpea production is hampered by several abiotic and biotic constraints. Parasitic weed Alectra vogelii is a formidable biotic constraint in cowpea production. This study was implemented to determine gene actions involved in cowpea seed size and its resistance to Alectra in order to determine the appropriate breeding approach to develop resistant cowpea varieties to Alectra vogelii. For this purpose, a half diallel of 9 parents was developed at Kamboinse in 2016. The F 1 and their parents were screened in screen house with Alectra vogelii seed collected from Alectra infested field in Koupela in centre east Burkina Faso. Data were collected on dates to cowpea flowering, cowpea hundred seeds weight and the severity of Alectra 70 days after planting and analysed with Diall 98 software. Both additive and non-additive gene actions were operative for the investigated characters. Additive gene effects were more important, resulting in high narrow sense heritability, inferring that breeding progress can be achieved through backcross or single seed descent method.
