Coworker Influence Upon Individual Internalization of Safety

Abstract: What is the influence of coworkers upon the individual's internalization of safety? Despite it being recognized as one of the most pervasive determinants of individual behaviour, social influence upon individual safety motivation has largely been overlooked by safety studies. “…This aligns well with results from a study in safety-critical industries, which suggested that social support and trust from co-workers validated the individuals' sense of competency. This sense of competency was the first defence in dealing with work ambiguity, but it also anchored basic work identity ( Jackson, 2017 ). “…In a qualitative study, Gyllensten and Törner (2021) found that peer discussions on how rules should be situationally interpreted and implemented were important to develop a common interpretation of complex rules. Further, Jackson (2017) stated that social support from and trustful relations with co-workers validated the individual’s sense of competence and that such a sense of competence was a first defence in handling competing demands.…”

“…In safety culture and climate research, the importance of managers' unrebutted priority of safety is wellestablished (Christian et al, 2009;Beus et al, 2010). Organizational cultures, and thus safety and security cultures, also comprise social norms among co-workers, and Jackson (2017) found that co-worker social support and trust was important for individuals to internalize group safety priorities and validate the individual's sense of competency. This sense of competency was important in dealing with work ambiguity.…”
