Cow's milk allergy guidelines: a quality appraisal with the AGREE II instrument

Abstract: A number of guidelines on CMA are available; however, their quality varies. Overall, the guidelines developed by recognized professional/scientific organizations were of the highest quality. These guidelines should be recommended for use. Still, the methodological quality of CMA guidelines may be improved.

“…Milk allergy guidelines are frequently published, much more so than other food allergy guidelines—perhaps due to the high impact of milk allergy on individual dietary regimes, but possibly also due to the importance of milk allergy for commercial concerns. With this in mind, Ruszczynski's assessment of milk allergy guidelines using the AGREE II tool is of interest . The authors identified significant variation in guideline quality, with highest quality seen for guidelines produced by professional organizations such as BSACI, WAO, or EAACI.…”

Deschildre et al, 116 reporting findings from the MIRABEL PNA study, confirmed earlier observations from the UK that severity of reaction is associated with age; adolescents and young adults had the highest rate of severe reactions, compared with younger children.…”

“…5 The main reason is that the quality of reporting practice guidelines seems to be low. 6 The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II instrument was published by a group of international guideline developers and researchers. 7 The purpose of the AGREE II is to provide a framework for assessing the quality of guidelines, provide a strategy for the development of guidelines and inform what information and how this information should reported in guidelines.…”
