COVID‐US: A simplified approach to cardiopulmonary ultrasound in suspected and confirmed COVID‐19 patients in surge crisis

Abstract: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) pandemic has placed an unprecedented challenge on healthcare systems across the globe. Rapid assessment of the cardiorespiratory function to monitor disease progression and guide treatment is essential. Therefore, we have designed the COVID-US: a simplified cardiopulmonary ultrasound approach to use in suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients, to aid front-line health workers in their decision-making in a surge crisis.

“…POCUS examinations conducted in pairs with only one healthcare provider interact with the patient in order to minimize nosocomial and fomite transmission has also been recommended 49 . The CLUE protocol has been proposed to help risk‐stratify patients presenting to the ED with suspected COVID‐19, 86 while a simplified cardiopulmonary ultrasound approach named COVID‐US was established to aid front‐line health workers in their decision‐making in a surge crisis 87 . An interdisciplinary team of intensive specialists has also established a consensus on the required qualifications to conduct LU, optimization of the transducer settings and LU protocol in managing COVID‐19 patients in the ICU 88 …”
