COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Dose Acceptance: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) booster dose vaccination after completing the primary vaccination series for individuals ≥18 years and most-at-risk populations. This study aimed to estimate the pooled proportion of COVID-19 vaccine booster dose uptake and intention to get the booster dose among general populations and healthcare workers (HCWs). “…The current survey found that nearly 70% of populations in the areas with environmental risk exposure took COVID-19 booster dose vaccinations. This uptake rate of COVID-19 vaccination was higher compared with the findings from a current systematic review and meta-analysis in the world setting on COVID-19 booster dose vaccination by Abdelmoneim et al [ 45 ]. The uptake rate of the COVID-19 booster dose vaccination from eight publications around the world with 12,995 participants was 31%.…”

“…As mentioned earlier, WTP is influenced by factors such as age, education level, and monthly income, according to numerous studies [ 14 , 17 , 50 , 54 ]. More knowledge of the danger of COVID-19 can be ascribed to age and education, with lower levels of complacency linked to higher acceptance of vaccination [ 16 ]. According to Cerda et al [ 50 ], individuals with lower levels of education showed less willingness to get vaccinated.…”

“…Another survey study found that only 14.5% (155/1072) of healthcare workers (HCWs) were willing to pay 100 CNY (equivalent to USD 14.25) for a booster vaccine, while 53% were unwilling to pay [ 14 ]. Sociodemographic, individual attitudes, and beliefs are factors that greatly affect booster dose vaccine acceptance and the WTP for booster doses [ 11 , 16 , 17 ]. Being a HCW, having higher incomes and having a high risk of COVID-19 were previously identified as factors associated with higher WTP for the vaccine [ 17 ].…”

“…A similar study in Greece was conducted in May 2022 and found that 69.1% of nurses intended to take a second booster dose [ 21 ]. Furthermore, according to a meta-analysis, the COVID-19 first booster dose acceptance among healthcare workers was 66% with a wide range from 36% to 90% [ 22 ]. However, all studies in this meta-analysis measured the willingness of healthcare workers to accept a first booster dose and were conducted much earlier than our study, i.e., from August 2021 to February 2022.…”

“…Until now, only one study has investigated the intention of nurses to take a booster dose, finding that 69.1% of fully vaccinated nurses are willing to accept a booster dose [ 21 ]. A recent meta-analysis found that the acceptance of a booster dose among healthcare workers was 66%, with higher levels of acceptance in the Western Pacific region and the European region and lower levels in the Southeast Asian region and the Eastern Mediterranean region [ 22 ]. Moreover, the acceptance rate among healthcare workers (66%) was lower than that of the general public (81%).…”
