COVID-19: review of case reports

Abstract: Recently published case reports relating to anesthesia in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were reviewed. The diagnosis of COVID-19 was confirmed by positive results of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Numerous reports handled emergency cesarean delivery. Primary symptoms and laboratory data of pregnant women with COVID-19 were similar to those of non-pregnant patients. “…An example of a standardized questionnaire has been provided in the guidelines [14], which includes questions regarding five major symptoms (fever, dry cough, difficult breathing, loss of smell, and loss of taste) and ten minor symptoms (sore throat, rhinorrhea, chest pain, pain in the muscle, severe fatigue, confusion, headache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and a rash or cracked skin on the fingers or hands). “…The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs through secretions, droplets, faecal-oral contamination [8,11,12] or consumption of infected meat [7,8], there is no evidence of vertical transmission [8,13] although a diagnosis of COVID-19 was made in a newborn few hours after delivery from infected pregnant woman suggesting that its possibility cannot be completely excluded [13]. Moreover, the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is expected from asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic and symptomatic patients [6].…”

“…In this context, the literature on the anesthetic management of confirmed/suspected COVID-19 patients mainly focuses on airway management, choice of anesthetic techniques according to planned surgical procedure, patient transport and operation room (OR) managing plan, and the use of personal protective equipment [5][6][7][8][9]. There is also an accumulation of actual cases of infected patients, especially those of pregnant women, which have been frequently reported [10,11].…”
