COVID-19-induced granulomatosis with polyangiitis

Abstract: COVID-19 and granulomatosis with polyangiitis share many clinical and radiological features, making it challenging for clinicians to distinguish between the two. In this case report, we describe a patient who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in October 2020. One month later, she presented with persistent fatigue, shortness of breath and anaemia with worsening renal functions, found to have elevated antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and antiproteinase 3 antibodies, and diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangi… Show more

“…Their results confirmed the molecular autoantigen transformation and post-translational modifications due to the influence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on host cells. These findings support the reports about the appearance of autoimmune diseases after COVID-19 [44][45][46] and confirm their nonrandomness. In all cases, the autoimmune pathology occurred after the end of the clinical manifestation of COVID-19.…”

“…Other proposed etiopathogenetic mechanisms have been related to (i) the presence of a persistent inflammatory status with the production of proinflammatory cytokines that may hamper the inner ear functions 36 ; and (ii) to the concomitant onset of an autoimmune response, such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis. 40 Drawbacks. This review considered among other data individual reports and case series (level of evidence 4), therefore it is susceptible to information bias, which might represent a limitation of the study.…”

“…One of the mechanisms driving such thrombosis in COVID-19 is the activation of neutrophils resulting in the formation of NETs [65,66]. Case reports of AAV occurring after diagnosis of COVID-19 have also been reported in the literature [67][68][69][70][71][72]. Although demonstrable vascular thromboses could not be identified in any of these reports, it is known that vascular thromboses might follow diagnosis of AAV.…”
