COVID-19 in patients with thoracic malignancies (TERAVOLT): first results of an international, registry-based, cohort study

Abstract: Background Early reports on patients with cancer and COVID-19 have suggested a high mortality rate compared with the general population. Patients with thoracic malignancies are thought to be particularly susceptible to COVID-19 given their older age, smoking habits, and pre-existing cardiopulmonary comorbidities, in addition to cancer treatments. We aimed to study the effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on patients with thoracic malignancies. MethodsThe Thoracic Can… Show more

“…COVID-19 has strikingly high mortality of around 30% in patients with lung cancer so high fear and anxiety could be expected in this group, but our study revealed that patients with lung cancer were affected by anxiety the least. 33 Also, patients with genitourinary cancers had a low fear of COVID-19. It is important to underline that majority of patients with lung or urogenital cancers were male individuals, who according to the multivariate model have significantly lower anxiety levels.…”

“…In this light, we do believe that the risk of COVID-19 and its complications is higher in the most fragile patients, especially those with advanced, more aggressive cancers. 9 In addition, only one patient was admitted to ICU, suggesting that a cancer diagnosis represented a criterion to select patients for intensive care. 9 The small number of confirmed COVID-19 cases clearly limit our observation.…”

“… 9 In addition, only one patient was admitted to ICU, suggesting that a cancer diagnosis represented a criterion to select patients for intensive care. 9 The small number of confirmed COVID-19 cases clearly limit our observation. Indeed, while single centre reports represent a relevant source of documentation for the extraordinary events of these months, joint multicentre analyses will be vital to get to a deeper understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on the cancer patient population.…”

“…However, severe cases have occurred in individuals without known risk factors ( 6 ). Two prospective trials have investigated the impact of COVID-19 in cancer patients: CCC19 (all cancers) and TERAVOLT (only thoracic cancers) ( 7 , 8 ). In the CCC19 cohort study, 121 (13%) deaths were recorded out of 928 of patients with cancer (82% solid tumors) and the risk factors for mortality were: older age, male sex, ever smoker, number of comorbidities, performance status of 2 or more, active cancer, and prior administration of azithromycin plus hydroxychloroquine ( 7 ).…”

“…Moreover, prior administration of chemotherapy (alone or in combination with immunotherapy), steroids, and anticoagulant therapy may increase risk of death ( 8 ). Following the initial spread of COVID-19 in Italy, a lockdown was imposed on 23 February, 2020 by the Italian government, covering those regions of Italy mostly hit by the pandemic spread.…”
