PurposeWomen's football faces an existential threat from COVID-19. Using case studies, the authors explore the COVID-19 responses of three highly ranked national football associations (Australia, England and the USA) and their professional women's football leagues to (a) compare and shed new insights into the wide range of phased responses and (b) establish recommendations for other nations to navigate major crises with their social and ethical responsibilities to women's football.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on institutional theory, a framework analysis was undertaken examining 71 articles to analyse the gendered global impacts of COVID-19 on women's football.FindingsResults highlight several important recommendations for nations to consider during the pandemic: (1) maintain active communication with the community to allay worries about the future of women's football, (2) gather support from health and government officials, (3) seek out commercial and broadcasting partnerships to drive revenue, and (4) the interests of women's football are best served when responsibility for the elite women's league does not rest (solely) with national football associations.Social implicationsThe authors argue that sport is an interwoven part of society and cannot be separated from gender equality issues irrespective of the pandemic.Originality/valueThe study is first to explore institutional pressures and football governing bodies during COVID-19 and provides a framework for nations to manage major crises.

El proyecto "Gobierno corporativo en las organizaciones deportivas: Un enfoque de género" (en adelante, proyecto GESPORT), pretende reforzar la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres en los ámbitos de decisión de las organizaciones deportivas en Europa. El objetivo principal del proyecto es mejorar el acceso de las mujeres a las juntas directivas de todas las federaciones nacionales deportivas en el marco de las acciones deportivas de Erasmus+. En otras palabras, el proyecto GESPORT pretende avanzar en el conocimiento de la presencia femenina en la toma de decisiones estratégicas y, con ello, contribuir a las políticas europeas de mejora y apoyo a la buena gobernanza en el deporte. Aunque hemos definido el género en términos binarios, como "masculino" y "femenino", reconocemos que se trata de términos ambiguos a los que no todas personas pueden o desean asignarse. Por ello, reflexionamos más sobre la cuestión de lo no binario como identidad social y la transexualidad en el deporte más adelante, en la sección de antecedentes del informe que sigue a la introducción.

The project “Corporate governance in sports organizations: A gendered approach” (hereinafter the GESPORT project) seeks to strengthen equality between men and women in the areas of decision-making in sports organizations in Europe. The project’s primary aim is to improve women’s access to the governing board of all sports federations under Erasmus+ sports actions. In other words, the GESPORT project aims to advance knowledge about female presence in strategic decision-making and, by doing this, contribute to the European policies for enhancing and supporting good governance in sports. Herein we have defined gender in binary terms, as “male” and “female”. However, we recognize that these are ambiguous terms to which not everyone can or wishes to be assigned. Therefore, we reflect more on the issue of non-binary as a social identity and transgender in sport later in the background section of the report following the introduction.
