COVID-19 impact on multi-site recruitment and enrollment

Abstract: Clinical trial recruitment is challenging, 1 particularly for socially disadvantaged patients. 2 The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified this challenge. In this research letter, we report on adaptations we made to participant recruitment processes for a clinical trial conducted across three geographic regions impacted by COVID-19 and their impact on recruitment. The trial, Implementation Research: Translating the ABCS into HIV Care (5U01HL142107-02), is a stepped wedge, cluster, randomized trial to test implementa… Show more

“…We observe that BCI research has provided ample evidence of the devices' proficiency in creating biometric profiles for users, as well as D). This is unsurprising, as researchers' ability to administer EEG studies to human participants in a laboratory was adversely affected by the imposition of lockdowns and travel restrictions worldwide [148][149][150]. While the number of studies using consumer-grade EEG was reduced during the pandemic, few EEG studies continued globally in diagnostic COVID-19 experiments [151][152][153].…”

“…The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented challenges in healthcare, including shifts in management for routine medical conditions,42 limitations on research activity43 and increased levels of pandemic-related stress,44 all three of which may impact various aspects of delivery of surgical interventions and patients’ experiences. To this end, PKIDS will evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on three levels: (1) limitations on healthcare access, (2) limitations on research study conduct and (3) patient-based anxiety due to COVID-19 (table 2).…”

“…In moving from face-to-face to remote interviews in PROJECT2, the adjustments needed to be approved by local ethical committees at the institutions involved, a process taking from several days to several months and possibly deepening the existing fragmentation of data collection across different countries. Discussions also revealed various levels of trust in local ethics bodies in different countries as their understanding of the specificities associated with social research was questioned (Gillam and Guillemin, 2018), especially in the context connecting the highly medicalised discourses of the pandemic with the medical roots of procedural ethics (Strujo et al ., 2020). In their approvals, the local committees were helpful in adjusting the formalities for the remote interviews.…”
