COVID-19 findings identified in chest computed tomography: a pictorial essay

Abstract: The disease caused by the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, has been recently described and became a health issue worldwide. Its diagnosis of certainty is given by polymerase chain reaction. High-resolution computed tomography, however, is useful in the current context of pandemic, especially for the most severe cases, in assessing disease extent, possible differential diagnoses and searching complications. In patients with suspected clinical symptoms and typical imaging findings, in which there is still no labora… Show more

“…In addition, other conditions sometimes overlap the infection caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Besides greater incidence of venous and arterial thromboses (5) described in these patients, we have also observed coinfection and superinfection, which are sometimes dramatic cases, generating imaging patterns that challenge the most classic aspects, as illustrated by us, (3) and also by other Brazilian authors. (4) Yet, we believe it is worth mentioning the higher incidence of barotrauma in these patients, (6) another factor that may contribute to pulmonary damage.…”

“…On the other hand, we have seen ground-glass opacities persisting for a long time in some patients. Although the progressive imaging behavior in COVID-19 is relatively predictable, (3,4) there are still cases that challenge this pattern.…”

“…Com muito entusiasmo, lemos o excelente artigo de revisão intitulado “Achados da COVID-19 identificados na tomografia computadorizada de tórax”, de autoria de Rosa et al, ( 1 ) publicado no último número desta revista. O referido trabalho ilustra com casos didaticamente apresentados a importância da tomografia computadorizada (TC) de tórax na detecção das manifestações pulmonares da doença pelo coronavírus 2019 (COVID-19), sem discutir seu papel no seguimento evolutivo da doença.…”
