Purpose This study aims to outline the importance of distinguishing between different types of societal crises and the role that plays in how social enterprises may respond to crises at hand. Design/methodology/approach Previous literature is used to distinguish between various types of societal crises discussed in the study. Social enterprise responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recession and the racial uprising in the USA that all erupted at the start of the 2020 decade are explored to illustrate the need for different responses to each. Findings The origin and manifestation of crises differ in that they may have public health, natural, economic or even intentionally man-made origins. In addition, in times of crisis, social enterprises must be prepared to innovate, adapt or at least manage the effects of one or more crises on their organizations. These innovations may be social, technology or economic innovations. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to knowledge about the role and value of social enterprise as a tool for addressing societal issues. The three types of crises explored in this paper will likely reoccur and evolve to manifest in new ways. As such, it is imperative that research on the efficacy of social enterprises during times of crisis are conducted to inform practice, policy and future research. Practical implications This study aims to inform and encourage institutions, particularly social enterprises, to recognize that “winter always comes.” Crises always happen in life and how organizations respond to such crises will differ based on the type of crisis at hand. This study particularly contributes to knowledge by emphasizing the need for social enterprises to think about both economic uncertainty and the role they play in addressing crises in the long-term, not just when they occur. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to explore the role and value of social enterprises as a tool for combatting major social crises such as racism, pandemics and recessions.

Purpose:The research objective is the question "How to manage societal security in COVID-19 conditions from the perspective of operational continuity of fire rescue service?" Design/Methodology/Approach: In order to achieve the research objective, the qualitative method was used. The research materials was collected using the SWOT analysis. We involved 99 fire rescue experts in SWOT analysis to identify the continuity factors. Basing on 3731 elementary results, we unified them to the reference 40 (10 per each SWOT category). This gave us a background to formulate specific and general manners to ensure the security. The collected empirical data was processed using the methods of analysis, synthesis and comparison to form conclusions. Deductive and inductive inference methods enabled the presentation of a comprehensive approach to social safety management. Findings: Specific methods relate to SWOT results, risk specifications and service conditions. Particular attention should be paid to physical isolation, organizational flexibility, personal protective equipment, training and access to up-to-date information on the outbreak. The research results can be used in scientific works, as well as in expert opinions for the needs of public administration units, in particular for the improvement of the management process of fire protection units. Practical Implications: The study will positively influence the understanding of the needs of various participants in the safety management process, both in the current functioning of the organization and in crisis situations. Originality/ Value: The study is an opportunity to present a comprehensive approach to managing social security in the face of COVID-19 and future epidemics. It covers risk management, operational continuity, and the safety and well-being of firefighters. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to present such an approach.

Analysis and Evaluation of COVID-19 Web Applications for Health Professionals: Challenges and Opportunities

The multidisciplinary nature of the work required for research in the COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges for health professionals in the battle against the virus. They need to be equipped with novel tools, applications, and resources—that have emerged during the pandemic—to gain access to breakthrough findings; know the latest developments; and to address their specific needs for rapid data acquisition, analysis, evaluation, and reporting. Because of the complex nature of the virus, healthcare systems worldwide are severely impacted as the treatment and the vaccine for COVID-19 disease are not yet discovered. This leads to frequent changes in regulations and policies by governments and international organizations. Our analysis suggests that given the abundance of information sources, finding the most suitable application for analysis, evaluation, or reporting, is one of such challenges. However, health professionals and policy-makers need access to the most relevant, reliable, trusted, and latest information and applications that can be used in their day-to-day tasks of COVID-19 research and analysis. In this article, we present our analysis of various novel and important web-based applications that have been specifically developed during the COVID-19 pandemic and that can be used by the health professionals community to help in advancing their analysis and research. These applications comprise search portals and their associated information repositories for literature and clinical trials, data sources, tracking dashboards, and forecasting models. We present a list of the minimally essential online, web-based applications to serve a multitude of purposes, from hundreds of those developed since the beginning of the pandemic. A critical analysis is provided for the selected applications based on 17 features that can be useful for researchers and analysts for their evaluations. These features make up our evaluation framework and have not been used previously for analysis and evaluation. Therefore, knowledge of these applications will not only increase productivity but will also allow us to explore new dimensions for using existing applications with more control, better management, and greater outcome of their research. In addition, the features used in our framework can be applied for future evaluations of similar applications and health professionals can adapt them for evaluation of other applications not covered in this analysis.
