Objective: to analyze data from patients hospitalized for unilateral inguinal hernioplasty in Brazil in the year before the COVID-19 pandemic, and during the period of the pandemic. Methods: this is a descriptive study, using data referring to hospitalizations for the surgical procedure of unilateral inguinal hernioplasty in Brazil from March 2019 to February 2020, comparing with data from March 2020 to February 2021. Data were collected from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) and the selected variables were: number of hospitalizations, average hospital stay rate and mortality rate. Results: in all, 119,312 hospitalizations were performed for unilateral inguinal hernioplasty in Brazil from March 2019 to February 2020. During the pandemic period, 53,445 hospitalizations were recorded for this procedure. The average hospital stay increased compared to the previous year. The mortality rate recorded in the year before the pandemic was 0.11, while in the period of the pandemic, it was 0.20. Conclusion: It was observed that during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the number of hospitalizations for unilateral inguinal hernioplasty was reduced by 55,21%. However, there was a significant increase in the mortality rate of this procedure. These results can be explained by the increase in mortality in patients infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and also by the restriction of performing elective surgeries, prioritizing emergency situations, which are more complicated, and consequently, with higher mortality.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate how the pandemic might have affected the number of elective and urgent hysterectomies for benign gynecological pathologies in a single-care tertiary center in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and to identify if there were any changes in the need for blood transfusions. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study. It involved all non-puerperal and non-oncological hysterectomies from October 2018 to July 2021. Patients were divided into two groups, namely, the pandemic group (46 patients) and the control group (92 patients). Data were collected by reviewing the physical and electronic patient records. We carried out the statistical analysis using the RStudio software. RESULTS: The number of planned hysterectomies was 82 in the pre-pandemic group and 23 in the analysis group, representing a 71.9% decrease. When considering only urgent surgeries, 10 of them happened in the pre-pandemic group, while 23 occurred in the pandemic group, representing an increase of 130%. CONCLUSION: Elective hysterectomies may improve the quality of life of women, reducing abnormal bleeding and pelvic pain. Treatment delay can worsen patients' physiological and biological conditions, such as lower labor production, humor, and social aspects, increasing costs to the healthcare system.

O momento operatório está relacionado com a especificidade do procedimento, a indicação para tratar uma condição clínica, as vantagens e desvantagens da espera em relação às condições do paciente, bem como a evolução do quadro do paciente. Podendo o momento operatório ser subdividido em procedimentos de emergência, de urgência ou eletivos. Considerando especificamente a atividade de assistência à saúde, a situação vivenciada pela população em 2020 deixou a falta de informação disponível para comparar e projetar a causa e efeito da interrupção das cirurgias na saúde pública, afetando também as cirurgias eletivas. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, de abordagem qualitativa, de caráter exploratório e descritivo. O Período de coleta foi de março a agosto de 2021 a partir das bases de dados Publisher Medline (PUBMED) utilizando os Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): “Health Services Accessibility”, “Coronavirus Infections”, “Elective Surgical Procedures" e os Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS), sendo eles: "Acesso aos Serviços de Saúde”, “Infecções por Coronavirus” e “Procedimentos Cirúrgicos Eletivos”. Com o intuito de ampliar a amostra, adotou-se uma segunda estratégia de combinação de descritores nas bases Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e na MEDLINE pela Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) utilizando apenas dois dos Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): “Coronavirus Infections” e “Elective Surgical Procedures” combinados entre si utilizando o operador booleano “AND”. Foram encontrados um total de 1247 artigos. Após aplicação desses critérios foram selecionados 12 estudos para compor a revisão. Podemos concluir que o coronavírus teve um impacto negativo nas cirurgias eletivas, muitos pacientes seguiram com suas patologias ou desejos esteticos de realizar suas cirurgias sem poder, muitos cirurgiões principalmente da plastica estetica pararam seus serviços por um tempo a fim de poupar gastos no periodo de suspensão.
