The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) to describe the surveillance and biosafety measures adopted by dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants who worked in the Southern Region of Brazil and (2) to evaluate access to information in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a multicenter and cross-sectional design, using a self-applied and validated online questionnaire. The availability of health-care-related supplies and the adoption of biosafety measures recommended by the Technical Note of the National Health Surveillance Agency No. 04/2020 were analyzed. A total of 2560 Brazilian workers participated (75.8% dentists, 15.7% dental assistants and 8.5% dental hygienists), 52.7% from the public and 37.7% from the private sector. Approximately 70% of the individuals reported being away from work during the pandemic. The surveillance measures adopted with higher mean scores were the investigation of respiratory infection symptoms when scheduling appointments and the adoption of distancing in the waiting room. Of the biosafety measures to avoid aerosols, the procedures with lower compliance were those related to the use of intraoral radiographs and rubber dams. Moreover, the correct use of personal protective equipment at work seems to be related to self-perceived stress and anxiety. Worryingly, high access to information through non-governmental documents was observed. Permanent health education policies should reinforce safe practices and encourage workers to implement biosafety and surveillance measures in health services.

Background: Socially vulnerable populations were vastly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic significantly impacted Brazil, pressuring its healthcare system for several months, with high mortality rates, even among the youngest population. Cohort studies combining disease surveillance are essential for understanding virus circulation in the community, surrogates of protection, vaccine effectiveness, and demand for health resources. Methods: Here, we present the protocol for a community-based prospective cohort study in the largest complex of favelas (slums) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Complexo da Maré). The study participants are residents initially recruited during a massive vaccination campaign in the community. Five waves of data collection at approximately six-month intervals were planned. The first two waves have been completed at the time of writing this study protocol, and the third is underway. The protocol comprises interviews, blood sampling, and records linkage with secondary data to enrich the profiles of cohort participants and community information. We will describe COVID-19 seroprevalence, socio-demographic characteristics, and the burden of COVID-19, followed by estimating the association of socioeconomic factors and the burden of disease with seroprevalence. Discussion: The primary aims of the study are to assess COVID-19 clinical, epidemiological and genomic profiles and outcomes in residents from Maré, including vaccine effectiveness, surrogates of immune protection, virus transmission in households, and the overall burden of the pandemic.

Introdução: O novo coronavírus SARS-CoV-2, causa principal da covid-19, foi identificado em dezembro de 2019 em Wuhan, na China. Desde então, espalhou-se pelo mundo e infectou milhares de pessoas. Serviços de saúde ficaram sobrecarregados com o atendimento de pacientes acometidos pela infecção. A enfermagem neste contexto é a categoria profissional que permanece mais tempo assistindo ao paciente. Diante desses fatos, é importante apresentar as opiniões, vivências e percepções dos enfermeiros atuantes na pandemia. Objetivo: Identificar, na perspectiva de enfermeiros, os impactos da covid-19 em seu cotidiano de trabalho no cuidado às pessoas diagnosticadas com câncer. Método: Estudo descritivo qualitativo baseado na teoria das representações sociais. O cenário do estudo ocorreu em uma instituição pública federal, referência no atendimento ao câncer, com 25 enfermeiros. Os dados foram coletados por meio da técnica de entrevista semiestruturada e de um questionário sociodemográfico. A análise dos dados foi realizada pela técnica de análise de conteúdo temática. Resultados: Participaram da pesquisa 22 enfermeiras (88%) com atuação na área oncológica de oito a 30 anos. A análise resultou em quatro categorias centrais: conceitosatribuídos pelos enfermeiros à covid-19; impactos da pandemia no cotidiano dos profissionais; impactos da pandemia na instituição; e impactos da pandemia em pessoas com câncer. Conclusão: Diante de um evento pandêmico, os enfermeiros foram essenciais para o enfrentamento da covid-19. Percebeu-se que as mudanças na rotina da instituição, o uso de equipamentos de proteção individual (EPI), a redução do número de leitos e o índice de absenteísmo afetaram tanto a vida do profissional quanto a do paciente.
