COVID-19 associated nervous system manifestations

Abstract: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a global pandemic in the last year. Along with major respiratory distress, a myriad of neurological manifestations was also reported to be associated with COVID-19 patients. These cases indicate that SARS-CoV-2 can be considered as an opportunistic pathogen of the brain. SARS-CoV-2 enters the brain through the olfactory bulb, retrograde axonal transport from peripheral nerve endings… Show more

“…Secondly, SARS-CoV-2 may enter the central nervous system via retrograde axonal transport using the peripheral nerve terminals, for example, the terminal olfactory nerve or the enteric nervous system. Finally, viral entry could also be facilitated by infected macrophages and monocyte, which behave as carriers [ 59 , 60 , 61 ]. It has been demonstrated via mRNA and protein expression that ACE2 is present on the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in the skin, luminal organs, and meninges.…”

“…The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to public health, and not only because of the deaths numbering in the hundreds of thousands, but also because of the post-COVID-19 conditions that have complicated the lives of millions of people after they were infected. Complications of COVID-19 include autoimmune, cardiological, oncological, neurological, and chronic inflammatory conditions [210,211]. Public health systems around the world face a difficult task of rehabilitating hundreds of millions of people afflicted by COVID-19.…”

“…Segundo Khatoon (2022) O caminho direto para a neuroinvasão seria neuronal, conforme Lopez-Hortua (2022) descreve. Taga (2022) relata a hipótese do nervo olfatório, trigêmeo e os receptores gustativos serem rotas de entrada para o vírus e Vakili (2021) relata que a placa cribriforme do etmoide pode ser outra porta de entrada.…”
