COVID-19 associated kidney impairment in adult: Qualitative and quantitative analyses with non-enhanced CT on admission

Abstract: Highlights Renal parenchyma attenuation on non-enhanced CT decreases in COVID-19. Renal parenchyma attenuation is negatively correlated with serum creatinine levels. Perinephric fat stranding suggests more severe renal impairment in COVID-19. Non-enhanced CT could be used in evaluation of COVID-19 associated renal impairment on admission.

“…In another retrospective study, Huang et al [ 74 ] highlighted the usefulness of non-contrast CT on the assessment of renal impairment associated with COVID-19, featuring as perinephric fat stranding (PFS) and decreased renal parenchymal density. PFS corresponds to the thickening of perinephric bridging septa, which are fibrous lamellae that divide the perinephric space into multiple compartments, limiting the distribution of fluids, such as urine, pus and blood[ 75 ].…”

“…En la TC sin contraste se puede identificar disminución de la atenuación del parénquima renal y alteraciones de la grasa perirrenal 52 que se correlacionan con la alteración de los niveles de creatinina, y en los estudios con contraste se describen infartos renales 47 (hasta en el 20% en una serie 46 ) y se puede demostrar disminución de la perfusión renal, hallazgo que puede incluso preceder a la alteración de la función renal 53 .…”

“…On non-contrast CT, J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f perinephric fat stranding and thickening of Gerota's fascia correlated with higher serum creatinine levels in patients with AKI, suggesting more severe inflammation and parenchymal injury (34). Following the administration of contrast, geographic hypodense areas maybe observed in the periphery of the kidneys from hypoperfusion attributed to vasculopathy (35) [Figure 13].…”
